I have acquired a second hand rug

It has a few small tears which need fixing, and could do with a clean and re-proof.

Firstly, does anyone know where I can get a kit/some stuff for repairing the rug?

Secondly should I repair it and then get it washed and reproofed, or the other way round??!

if it's justa few small holes sew it using either fishing wire or dental floss (both are virtually unbreakable). then buy some nikwax and reproof. It's worth looking on ebay to get either an old wax jacket or an old rug of any size to use for patching jobs.

I repair rugs all the time - not through choice I might add!

My favourite weapons are leather needles and upholstery thread. The thread is virtually unbreakable and easier to sew with than fishing line (haven't tried floss, but it doesn't come in dark colours!!).

I also have a "speedy stitcher" for thicker stuff. This will enable you to put D rings on a 400g rug. The only downside is that I haven't done a job with it where I didn't stab myself and drip blood everywhere!!
