Hi,
I've got a few turnout rugs with rips in which I'm hoping to repair myself. I've got an old trashed rug which I can cut patches from but what's the best way to do it? Glue? Sew? Sew up the hole then glue the patch on? If you glue it, what glue is best? I've got a sewing machine but I'm not convinced that would be the best way to do it. Thanks in advance :)

Hi, I've fixed many a rug using stormsure glue. Best way I have found is to put the patch under the rip and glue the outer fabric over the new patch - that way you are glueing clean fabric together (not the muddy part) - the area needs to be flat to help the bond so lay out on wall or floor to dry - but once dry the seal lasts for years - be aware the glue is VERY strong and wear latex gloves - dont get it on your skin - trust me it aint good :/

If you have a rug with padding (m/w or h/w) doesn't sewing it with the machine cause a cold spot where you've sewn it through both layers though? Or do you unpick a seam, sew the outer layer and then sew the seam up?

I've had repaired rugs come back where they have been stitched through, and it ruins the waterproofing. The last one came back with the leg strap sewed to the inside top of the rug, so I wenzle thread stitch them, then apply Wilkinsons rubber glue to the stitching and it works very well.

On small rips on a synthetic rug I cut a patch a couple of inches bigger than the rip. Push it inside the rug and use a glue gun to glue it in place, then I run the glue gun along the outside of the rip to seal it. Sometimes if the rip is really small I'll just glue edges together.

Sewing machine and extra strong thread for patches on bigger rips.... It will looj better and last longer than doing by hand, You may well find you have to invest in a semi industrial machine for going through several layers of thick fabric, sewing on straps etc, you can pick up oldie but goodie machines on eBay for less than 50 quid

Having several trashed rugs, one with a six foot slash across the side and ripped to bits fronts what would you use apart from a saddlery store, these are new rugs, used for part of one winter so like new apart from the rips, having three rug rippers, feel my pain

I had a week old rug with a rip from one side to the other. I patched it inside first then the outside . I use bonded nylon thread and put dubbing round the edge of the patches for waterproofing. You can also buy ripstop fabric on ebay for patches if you have no old rugs.
