only if you actually land on your head, a lot of people think they have landed on their head whereas they will have fallen on their side and then banged there head... if this is the case, then no, never would i replce one, if i actually fell on my head then maybe yes.... ive never replaced a hat except for when i grow out of them.....
You should replace them when you have a heavy fall on your head - you know when you really bang your head as opposed to a 'bump'. After a heavy bang to the head the integrity of your hat will be compromised and if you had another fall you would have less protection. It may seem like a lot of money - but hopefully you don't fall that badly that often - but you only have one head.
Ooo I actually know the answer to this as I was trained to fit hats on Tues!
People usually think it is the outside of the hat that is affected, whereas it's actually the polystyrene middle. When you fall on your head - or drop the hat, the polystyrene absorbs the shock so it doesnt travel to your brain. Once its absorbed the shock once the polystyrene starts to clump together so the next time its impacted on it basically just cracks and none of the shock will be absorbed meaning it all goes directly to your head.
So basic answer is yes - its very essential!
Also never knew this but large amounts of sun exposure has the same affect - so never leave your hat on the parcel shelf in your car!
Yes. I whacked my head hard enough to see stars. My hat looked fine but an x-ray showed two hairline fractures at the point of impact. I am now on my 2nd HS-1!
Yes I replace mine if I hit my head, had to do this twice, once I fell off and got back on, an hour later I went to get on again as I couldn't remember riding! The other time I fell off and hit my head on the sleepers around the side of the arena - ouch!
I landed ON my head on Tuesday - have whiplash and the hat went in the bin. My YO practically walked me to the bin to make sure i put my hat in it ! I now have a nice new Champion jockey skull and no plans to land on it any time soon.
i landed on my head sunday before last, directly straight down head first into the ground. the week before i landed on my side and whacked head on ground so hard i had whiplash the next day. i think it might be time i boguht a new one! i think a new neck is in order too - it keeps crunching!
Please, please do replace your hats guys, either after a fall or every few years for the reasons BG explains. My hat got knocked off when I took a nasty tumble a month or so ago and you do NOT want to know what the back of my head looked like after hitting the tarmac at speed. A&E and plastic ward surgeon said it's a miracle I didn't fracture my skull and kill myself. Hats can be replaced, heads can't.
If I fell on my head I would replace my hat. Touch wood I've never fallen on my head, I've had my current everyday hat about six years and I think that's about average for me, it's old and grubby now so I may downgrade my show hat.
I have had two very heavy falls and have replaced my hat both times.
If you fall in the school, I wouldnt say its necessary unless the geegee kicks you in the head as you fall or whilst your down.
Also if you hit your head hard please replace it. Its not worth taking the risk. I'm 24 and I have a deal with my dad where if I fall and hit my head, he will always buy me the replacement hat.
