Following pirani's post, got me thinking. (dangerous i know)

How many of you following a fall, replace your hat?

I must admit that i have had my hat for about two years, so its a relatively new ventair one. Although i have fallen off a couple of times and if it weren't for the hat (would of dented my head for sure). However, i haven't replaced it..

It depends whether I fall on my head or not. TBH in the big scheme of things hats aren't that expensive compared to the amount of money that we spend on our horses

I replace mine if I have a fall, or if it is over 2 years old... whichever happens first. I only buy cheap ones so I am not botherd.

Some people spend a fortune on hats and they are loathed to scrap them.

But...
You have to think of riding hats like disposable tooth brushes! They have a shelf life and have mishaps. You could go to Harrods and buy a solid gold toothbrush... or go to Boots and buy a plastic one.... Riding hats are like most things in life you have to cut your cloth to suit your pocket! There is no excuse when you can buy a perfectly servicable hat, up to current standards for about 30 pounds.

I replaced mine last time I fell off but had fallen off in it before and kept it. My horse pecked on landing out hunting and fell on his face, I landed on my head and cracked the shell. Still put it back on and carried on jumping (my horse was fine, he got up and carried on without me, lol), naughty, I know but bravado got the better of me. Replaced it before I rode again but I tink you hve to be sensible about it. You know if you've damaged your hat or not and any one that cracks should obviously be replaced.

had my last one for 10 years and it smelt soooo bad

persuaded mum to buy me a new one last year

unless i fell hard on my head, i wouldnt replace it though-well maybe before the mould set in

I have recently replaced mine, because i thought I was GOING to fall off!! Wrong way to do it entirely I know but the old one was about 12 years old, and I was going to do my first XC charity ride in about 4 years, felt I needed to keep my brain in!

Luckily I didnt fall off at all and had an amazing time, and I LOVE my new champion ventair hat!!

I recently replaced my skull cap after about 4 years use and a number of falls. Thankfully OH paid for it as I think he was quite concerned about my safety!

I think if my hat took the brunt of a fall then I'd definitely replace it but otherwise I wouldn't bother.

You only ever get one head! a quick test for a new hat is if you hug it in your arms like you would a teddy.. or a small child... (it would have to be small

) then squeeze with moderate pressure, if it bowes under the pressure, it needs replacing, dont squeeze too hard, all hard hats are made to give somewhat.

Hope This Helps

i replaced my old hat after going round a cross country with it hanging off the back of my head because the padding was so non existant it was too big and one we got up to a fast canter/gallop it was just held on with the chinstrap round my neck, ooooops

I had also had several falls in it, including a nasty concussion. worked out it was about 12 years old

also have a nice velvet hat with a leather harness, which I keep for dressage & sj. never landed on that one...touchwood.

I am very bad, but now I nag others to replace theirs.

as above, depends if it has hit the ground in a fall, or if it has been dropped. if so, i stick an axe through it (so no-one can re-use it!) and get a new one.
i used to have my best hats on the lorry for events, then realised this was mental as i do 99% of my riding (including on the roads, youngsters etc) at home, so now have a HS1 on the lorry and in the tackroom. it's totally crazy to spend thousands on everything else and begrudge £30-100 on a hat to protect your most valuable asset by far, isn't it?!
