Can anyone tell me where and how I can report a farrier due to bad farriery causing lameness and unnecessary vets bills on BOTH of my horses in the last 2 weeks? Will I need a vet report? I am fuming and feel at least my vets bills should be reimbursed. Thanks.

you will need the support of your vets for this one, speak to them, they can point you in the right direction.
awful situation, i once had a farrier out (mine had gone to autralia for 8 weeks) who made my boy lame for 3 months!

A Complaint of Serious Professional Misconduct
5. If you wish to pursue a formal complaint you will need to complete a form setting out the details of your complaint and including all the relevant facts. You must also submit evidence to support your case if at all possible. Evidence may be in the form of two identical sets of identified, dated and pertinent photographs, video tapes or x-rays, reports from attending farriers or veterinary surgeons and statements from eye witnesses.

6. Please be aware that the quality and weight of evidence is a crucial factor in the determination of your complaint. Judgments can only be made on facts and hearsay will be excluded. For example, it would not be sufficient to say in your statement 'my vet said my horse's feet were in a terrible state'. You must submit a statement from your vet as to the condition of the horse's feet as he/she saw them.

7. The onus regarding the collection of evidence lies with the complainant since only you are aware of the full circumstances of your case. The function of the Council staff is purely administrative; they can advise on procedural matters but advice or opinions on individual cases cannot be given since this might prejudice the proceedings.

I seriously considered making a formal complaint about the farrier who did the below to my horse.

However, I just couldn't take the stress as I'm still working with my new farrier and my vet to get her sound again.

Her hoof now.

I'm just not strong enough at the moment.

My new farrier was very scathing and said that he'd (the old farrier) would probably only have to go on a refresher course if my complaint was upheld. So alot of stress with not much result even if I 'won'. :(

omg thats cronic I think we should name them and shame them :(
is it me or do those two pictures not look like the same foot one has more white on it than the other?????

Looks like the pics are taken from slightly different angles, so that why you can see different amounts of white.

HI farracat

Please have the strength to do this!

I went to the FRC over what happened to my horse (PTS due to farrier). It's 8 pages of info required and statements from vet, prognosis, how the vet believes this was caused, xrays and any other supporting evidence.

The Registrar at the FRC will look into it and give notice to the named farrier and asked to reply. Usually they hold disciplinary meetings every 3 months. I complained in the October and my farrier was formally disciplined in the January. He is still on probation this year although it comes to an end next January.

It is worth it! And saves the next person from the heartache.

Good luck and I hope you are successful!

Hi faracat
I hope your girls feet are recovering well.
I know you saw my boys feet, and he's perfect now.
I do wish I'd reported my farrier though, I paid him a hell of a lot of money, then I was stuck with vet bills. I almost lost my boy because of him.
My current farrier is fantastic and never charged me what he should have to cover his time. I would"ve appreciated having some of my costs reimbursed... instead I was told to ******* off by the farrier. ( charmed, I'm sure  )
I know that you don't feel you"ve got the energy at the moment, but I hope you have a chat with your vet or new farrier about taking it further.
Kx

Faracat - I am .

Your horses feet didn't get that long in the toe over night, I'm guessing we're talking months.
Why did you neither notice, or say anything before it got so bad?

Apologies if I have the wrong end of the stick :o.

It's a long saga.

Moved house Feb 2010. When she was first shod by the 'bad' farrier (who is thought of very well in these parts) I could see that it was 'different'. I got my very experienced friends (two people) to look at how he'd shod her, they both said that it was a very good job.

She unfortunately had a very deep puncture wound (sustained while in the field) on her OF where the frog meets the heel bulb. You only need to read the 'nail' threads on HHO to see how bad this was.

That finally got better. I noticed that the NF toe now looked a bit longer. Farrier says 'not surprising as she's been putting more weight on it due to the injury'.

She was back in work but pulled off a few front shoes and took alot of hoof away. In hindsight, this was because of the change of angle on the hooves. I checked with vet 1 as I was starting to feel unhappy.

Then she got an abscess on the NF which was a real pain to get rid of (it popped out of an old nail hole).

Then abscess on OF, quickly followed by abscess on NF.

Vet 1 and vet 2 saw her over this time. Vet 2 mentions hooves, I say that I'm not happy as fronts look long in the toe and OH isn't right either. They say give farrier a chance once she's sound and ready to be shod again.

I had talked to the Farrier every time he came about the changes to her hooves. He never really took my concerns seriously, eventually says that there's nothing that he can do to improve her hooves 'knowing her'.

I sacked him.

New farrier comes. He says that even with the extra weight bearing (sp?) due to the lamenesses she's had, her hooves should not have changed shape - 'bad' farrier basically lied to me. The abscesses were all due to the white line being opened up by the increased angle of her hooves.

Basically I believed his excuses and I feel terribly guilty about it. I have said before that everyone should try to understand trimming and shoeing. Plus, if you feel that your farrier is not taking your concerns/questions seriously, don't keep giving them chances - change farrier.

Hi Farracat,
I have contacted the farrier association today, I am wanting to report a farrier due to trimming my mares hooves back way to short and totally crippling her that then bought on Colic which meant she spent the weekend at hospital and now has liver damage due to inflammation. Hopefully she will make a full recovery, the vet is willing to put a report together for me and i have photos and videos of her, can you tell me if i need to submit any other information if poss, i do have a few of the girls willing to write statements as they were present after the farrier shod her, not sure if they would take this into account though. as much info you can give me would be appreciated!!!
many Thanks
