Hello,

I saw a horse yesterday whilst out driving that has raised concerns of mine. It was extremley thin (ribs/pelvis etc case) and very solemn. The grazing in the field was bare/none although where was what looked to be some hay under tarupaulin in the other side of the field. In all fairness, the other two horses in the field were in 'ok' condition but the field itself was a bit of a dump. I contacted the local livery yard to see whether there might be a specific reason for it being so thin (recently rescued perhaps?!) but the only response was that the owners were 'dodgy,' and I was best to continue and report it. Hopefully I've not got involved where there is no need to, but its on my conscience.

I have just phoned WHW but I've been cut off, and I'm now struggling to get back through to them. I've left it 10 mins incase they're trying to get back through to me but still nothing and my phone will not dial up - saying 'number not in service.'

Am I right in assuming that they will call me back when their service picks up?! Or is it up to me to keep trying?

Thanks.

Did you phone their welfare hotline - 08000 480180? I doubt whether they will call you back, so just keep trying. Or try the BHS Welfare Office (they might pass it on to WHW) or your local Trading Standards to see whether they have an Animal Health Officer. Or, depending on the area, Blue Cross, Redwings or any of the other welfare charities - except RSPCA, don't bother with them, they will only muddy the waters.

Actually in fairness to the RSPCA whilst they do get bad press and do some questionable things they have always been brilliant in the past when I've reported animals to them. The call centre staff took all details on each occasion and then I received a follow up call from the officer after they'd visited.
I know people will be quick to share tales of times they haven't been much use but if you're worried about this horse what harm can it do to make the call and ask them to visit it. Good luck

I'd personally phone the BHS - they are always good at dealing with reports and tend to send someone out fairly quickly.
