I had one of my Rambo Wugs washed as my horse had pulled it off the rack and peed on it!!! Although I paid extra for it to be reproofed it really isn't as waterproof as it used to be.

Has anyone else found that rugs aren't waterproof anymore after washing despite reproofing?

What can I use to get it properly water proof again?

I've had this problem and told the rug washing people about it and they just washed and reproofed again. Unfortunatley I haven't had a horse since then so my rugs are tucked away in the house and I have no idea until I put them on my new horsey this winter whether or not they're waterproof.

I'll follow your thread with interest.

I sent 6 of my out door rugs for cleaning and reproofing and not one of them came back waterproof! Something to do with the detergent that they get washed in stripping the rug of the proffing material - so i was told.

Since this a spread my rugs on the floor and wash with hose pipe fairy liquid and a yard brush! Then make up a big bucket of Nikwax reproofer and sit and paint them with it. It doesn't take long, is cheeper and they are waterproof!

I wash and proof rugs as part of my business. Some detergents will affect waterproof rugs therefore when washing turnouts I use a product especially designed for the job (nik wax rug wash) and then proof with nik wax. I havn't had any come back yet! (Touch wood

) The only problem with the rug wash it is not as good at removing stains and smells. That is why some people use regular detergent.

Yes I had a reasonably waterproof rambo sent away and it came back un waterproof! I now use it a s a stable rug. I also just hose down with a pressure washer now. It is linked to detergents I think.

Detergents will most definately de-wateproof your rugs.
You need to wash them in soap (I use "granny's soap flakes")
However, I would say all is not lost if you have a rug come back from the cleaners no longer waterproof.
I bought a rambo rug off e-bay recently. It arrived in immaculate condition (was a used rug) but I soon found it was not waterproof!
I re-washed it in above soap flakes to get rid of any detergent, made sure there was no detergent in the soap drawer of the machine, and then washed it again in the Nikwax.
It came up like new again and is back to being completely waterproof!
The Nikwax costs about £11 a litre which is enough to do two rugs in the machine.

Bum - just had my two turnouts done - one I am sure has been washed and proofed and came back fine, the other (Rambo Supreme) I got second hand....hope that they survive.

So, if they are no longer waterproof, fairy liquid and nikwax should sort? Good. I ain't buying new rugs !!!

I had 3 lightweight rhino rugs washed and reproofed professionally a couple of years back and they are no longer waterproof.

Nooooooooo don't buy a new one!
Wash it in something simple, like dreft or plain soap flakes such as marketed for woolens, and then wash it again with Nikwax.
It should be fine!
