Rescue centres in North West Wales?

My daughter's pestering us for a TB and absolutely doing our head in. She's got a little too big for her pony and although the mare will carry her okay, daughter thinks she's going to hurt her.

I've been hunting around for rescue centres and can't find a single one, TB or otherwise, in North West Wales. Called the RSPCA and they couldn't find one either. In fact, last year at the stables we were keeping our pony at the time, the RSPCA had a local welfare case and temporarily housed some ponies at the yard ... before shipping them all the way to the nearest RSPCA equine centre in Shrewsbury. That's quite a drive from where we are.

Is there an equine rescue centre in Anglesey or Gwynedd?

Thanks. I actually found Freshfields just after I posted. They're based in Caernarfon, which isn't too far away. They do have one TB but he's 21 and his condition isn't great. I've been pestered to give them a ring in the morning.

The next closest rescue centre of any kind I can find is in Wrexham, which is 1 1/2 - 2 hrs drive away, although most of the journey would be along the A55. They have a couple of 4 year olds. That's stretching the mileage a bit but I suppose if the wife was willing to drag us to the back of nowhere, somewhere in the Wrexham area, in the middle of winter 5 years ago to get a puppy (just because she wanted a RED border collie) then anything's possible for the right animal.

Is there a reason your daughter thinks a rescued tb is the right first horse for her? As I guess she is young you should really be looking for something suitable for her rather than a specific breed, a 4 year old is going to need a lot of schooling, if it has raced it may come with issues well beyond the capabilities of a young girl used to riding a pony, it is good to be thinking of rescues but you really need one that has already been well rehabbed and educated so you can try it properly.

Totally agree with this. If you are willing to travel to Wrexham it might be worth travelling as far as Hereford to the Branch of Bransby Horses. Have a look on their website but take it with a pinch of salt as they often have horses in that aren't on the site

I agree be wary about getting a TB because your daughter thinks she should have one, if you can get your daughters riding instructor involved in helping you choose what to look for and maybe come to view with you that's always helpful. A friend's daughter decided she wanted a TB and within a few months she was completely over horsed had a few bad falls and hospital visits. We actually became friends because she loaned my fresian cross gelding to get her confidence back. She went on to buy a lovely gelding with an amazing jump and has really grown as a rider :)

Thanks for the replies. Our 'emergency' is over for the time being. She was bored because the cob she had been riding had gone off to be schooled. We weren't sure if he'd be back but he's back now so she's happy.

She's had plenty of falls in the past five years and broken a couple of bones in her hand and finger. But she's a tough cookie and always gets back on as soon as she can. In fact, following some injuries where she's been ordered by the doctor to stay off horses for a few weeks, it's been impossible to get her to follow doctor's orders.

One of the worst falls she had was back last year and that was from a TB x. He got excited by another horse in the jumping arena next door and took off.

She can have a TB when she's older.
