Urgh. I thought I was on the ball last year, I stored my lighter rugs in vacuum bags, stuck them in a trunk and stored the trunk in my trailer. Unfortunately I didn't realise that my vacuum bags were terrible quality and that my trailer window had a slight leak...went to get one out today after a couple of months and it's wet through with the bag burst! I didnt have a chance to check through the others within the trunk before work but I fear the worst.
The one I did bring out smelled quite damp but thankfully doesn't seem to have any actual mould or anything growing on it.

What are my best chances of saving these rugs? I've hung that one up to dry in a well ventilated area for now in order to assess the damage. Will I need to have them professionally washed and reproofed or will I be okay just giving the inside a bit of a scrub at home, drying them out thoroughly and letting the rain take care of the outside?
Hoping they can be salvaged in some way as probably over £300 worth in there. Have learned my lesson and will be storing them in IKEA bags in our tack room from now on!

I would air them outside for as long as possible in the sunshine o reduce the smell then have them at least washed - your would need to ask the rug washers if they recommend reproofing.
