I am planning to write a literature review.

My topic area is diagnostic imaging of horses, however I am thinking of a research question related to the distal limb.

Does anybody know of a gap in the research than needs filling, to do with diagnostic imaging of the distal limb in horses?

I am hoping to research all modalities including nuclear medicine, mri, ct and plain radiographs.

I was thinking of doing 'The most effective radiological pathway for diagnosing degenerative changes within the distal limbs of horses' bearing in mind that plain radiographs do not show early stages of degenerative changes and therefore can lead to a misdiagnosis however I do not feel there is a gap in the research for this, at all! I also feel the patient pathway is quite clear nowadays and there isn't much room for change when considering financial implications and insurance protocols.

If anybody can think of any suggestions to do with diagnostic imaging of the equine limb, or other parts, then please let me know.

I have a placement at a large horse hospital in a few weeks so I am hoping to throw some ideas around with the staff there too.

Thank you.

From our reluctantly aquired extensive experience in imaging :( a few thoughts..

3D ultrasound needs further investigation

Thermal scanning is a useful indicater and did match the later MRI scan

xrays/scans that could be used in conjunction with arthroscopy ie something to go down the hole during surgery

something cheaper than MRI that can penetrate the hoof or pelvic area
