my horse has been ill since thursday last week. Her glands (lymh nodes i believe) are swollen more so on the one side, she has a runny nose mainly clear fluid occasionally slightly snotty, weepy eyes, is lethargic and not drinking (although weeing and pooing), she is eating plenty of lush grass but not interested in any other food (I saw her licking mud in the field today so im thinking possible deficiency), her temperature is normal, she hasnt got a cough.

She has had a 5 day course of pen and strep and bute.
She has tested negative for strangles both on a swab and blood test.
The vet has suggested give the antibiotics time to work but is coming back out tomorrow as im concerned about dehydration.

Any opinions? suggestions? experiences? ideas?

Only that I have had this a couple of times with two of my horses, they were on antibiotics and ventipulmin I think. They were both fine in a few days. Good luck.

she is now eating although only if I hold it up for her. she is drinking small amounts. still grazing like its going out of fashion. but...
her glands are still up (although not quite as big), her nose is still runny and she is still lethargic.

Im waiting on blood results that were taken Thursday. Just to see how her body (liver, kidney, blood cells) is coping with the infection.

the vet still doesnt seem worried but it feels like this is going on forever.

anyone dealt with similar???

At the end of the course if still infected try another antibiotic like baytril which is for respiratory tract infections. Feed from the ground. There is quite a bit of moisture in the grass, you could give a salt lick, e.g. Licking mud which would encourage horse to drink.

thanks putasocinit, im putting electrosalts in her feed and she picks at a bit of soaked hay. the vet said she seemed well hydrated Thursday. desperate for the blood results now but was really hoping for some impovement its been a fortnight she's been ill for and 5 days since the course of pen and strep finished.
