Hi been looking for someone to bring my boy back to work, i've put up ads and in feed stores, all im getting is novice teenagers, and my boy needs an experienced rider, is anyone else having the same problem? x
I used someone experienced to school my horse while was away on training and she charged £20 an hour which I thought was reasonable. She trained with my old trainer so at least I knew he would be schooled how I wanted.
It would depend on individuals I guess. Why don't you try and put up a slightly different advert?
Word it so that you would like an experienced rider to school your horse x times a week and it would be paid, but you'd like to see qualifications etc.
Alternatively, does your tack shop have a folder with adverts in? Usually experienced riders advertise their services too.
Try and find an instructor (by word of mouth if poss). Not all of them will ride clients' horses, but some do and you're usually assured a good level of skill and ability.
I'd definitely try and watch any potential folk ride and handle horses before you book them. I've had a couple that whilst ok for initial lessons, on seeing them ride my horse my view quickly changed.
I am an experienced rider and currently house sitting. I am schooling a naughty event pony and riding the event horse to keep them fit.. I am charging £10 per ride, whether I hack for an hour or school for 30 minutes.
I wouldn't pay £20 to get a horse fit but thats just me.
Charge depends on how much skill is needed too. If its just a case of hacking a non-novice horse, less skill & work is required than if he needs working properly out hacking. Also worth asking at any big local hunt/comp/racing yards too, they could well have a groom that is more than capable who needs the extra cash.
He just not confident out hacking, can be quiet spooky, and that made me lose my confidence, so we would just be a disaster together, and i've not long had surgery for a slipped disc, hence im not strong enough yet to sit his spooks, so thought if i pay someone to do the initial couple of months i think i should be fine x
I used to pay £12/hr to get/keep my event horse fit when I was working away. £20 sounds too much. I had a lovely girl that I trusted, who had her stage 3. She has now stopped doing freelance and I have really struggled to find anyone else as good and reliable. Even paid.
I ended up with a couple of sharers, but the horses aren't as fit and I don't know if I could ever event again! Try equineadverts.co.uk perhaps?
If I were you, I would pay a local instructor, if there is someone, who would ride the horse initially and then would be able to give you some lessons on him..
The other option would be to send him away on schooling livery for a couple of weeks, to get him going and then you could carry on.
