A yard manager suggests that there are full liveries there?
DIY means exactly what it says on the tin. The YARD OWNER is responsible for the health and safety and maintanence of the complex. The yard manager, in my opinion, wouldn't be responsible for any DIY liveries. Maybe keeping the place clean. Any yard staff should make sure every horse has water but I wouldn't say it was one of thier responsibilities when the livery is DIY
It's a DIY yard only, the yard owner is in hospital so a family member has taken over. However things are running smoothly with issues on the yard and we have been kind of left to do everything including fence fixing etc!
my yard owner is fantastic! he deals with fencing, water troughs, removing muck trailer, providing tools, and genral yard maintanance. he also dealt with the abbatour (sp?) when they came to collect freddys body when he got PTS (moved the body with the forklift and loaded him for them). im on a diy only livery yard.
Under the welfar act 2006 the YM is responsible for all horses on the yard even if its DIY!
If the YM is in hospital then they should have 'employed' someone of suitable qualifications and experience to run the yard in their absence.
Their Employers, Public liability, care, custody and control Insurance Policy should explain what should be done in this situation and most business insurances cover this 'absence'.
Is a tricky one. In my experience what you may reasnobly expect a yard manager to do and what actually happens are rather different things!
At our first yard the owner/manager cashed the cheques. That was it! At our current yard it is a bit better than that, but generally at the moment she does no more than the first. When their horses trash the elec fencing in our fields (ours moved during some of the snow so our fields got used by the yo family horses) we fix it. You can ask them to but you would be out of luck! More happens during the better weather but for now if you want it doing you do it yourself!
It isn't how I think it should be (I think maintenence, even on a DIY yard, is the job of the yo/manager) but I like the yard so it doesn't do to rock the boat.
Have you mentioned to the family member what needs doing? It might just be that they have no idea what is required. Also, if your yo is v pooly in hosp then the yard prob won't be top of their list of priorities.
