Friend has just e-mailed to let a few of us in the RC know that she has a suspected case of strangles, her own young Highland and her two other youngsters :( It can't be confirmed yet as the labs not working, she has put the yard in 'Lock down', closed her arena to outsiders and is waiting for swab results. She has put notices on the gates and is taking all the usual bio-security measures. Only one of her horses goes out and about and has not been in contact with any others with any symptoms. I can only assume that someone passing her land has allowed their horse to 'talk' over the wall, thus passing on infected mucus, I do wish people wouldn't let their horses interact with those in fields that they pass.

I hope so too, but there was recently an outbreak in the area, on a yard where sadly no precautions were put in place, until the local equine community put sufficient pressure on them:(

How refreshing to read about a yard owner being entirely responsible and correct in her actions. I get so angry when 'rumours' surface of a yard that may possibly have strangles, and everyone denies it, and there is an air of shame and suspicion hanging over an entire area. Surely, if you are open and honest, and let everyone know, immediately, the risk of this horrible disease spreading is lessened? The more information, the better. I think attitudes are, slowly but surely, changing, and hopefully the younger (future) generation of yard owners will further change peoples attitudes.

good on her for making it known. labs are still working but slower and more expensive over holiday period. if you want/need fasster results then it will result in £ on the bill. unfortunately strangles is a funny one..... mainly passed on by contact but she could have a shedder, but she wont know if she has a shedder until 3 or 4 swabs are done! taking several weeks. but shutting down the yard and doing good discinfecting routines should contain whatever they have!! best of luck.

Interestingly, this yard owner is a woman in her 50's, the owner of the yard who tried to keep it quiet is in her 20's  But yes I absolutely agree that the lady with the current problem is doing all the right things :)
