I can't believe I am writing this but my precious little dog Dougal died on Thursday. He became unwell very quickly - he couldn't walk more than 50 yards without stopping and panting for breath. My husband took him to the vet but he collapsed as they arrived. The vet tired to revive him but couldn't.
It was congestive heart failure and fluid on his lungs. He had always had a heart murmur, which we knew about, which meant his little heart couldn't fight on.
I was at work when it happened. Hubby rang me and I drove straight to the vets in tears. The vet was lovely and let us sit with Dougal's body for as long as we needed to say goodbye. We also brought our other dog Katy in to see him. She sniffed him, especially round his nose and mouth. Then she licked his ear and looked at us as if to say 'OK, I know he's gone now.'
Dougal was a rescue who we got from the local dogs home 5 years ago. As far as we know he was about 8 years old when he died. He came to us with some issues (lack of socialisation and severe separation anxiety) but we worked hard with him and he turned into the best dog in the world.
He made us laugh every day that we had him. He was loved by everyone who met him. A huge doggy personality in a small body. My husband and I loved him so very much. We miss him. Run free now, my precious boy.
My friend Frances (Frances144 on here) took these wonderful photos of him last summer. She captured his every mood and I am so grateful that we have these to remember him by. I have her full permission to put them on here.
