The current speed limit legislation is a mess. In our vilage the main road which passes the village has a 50 mph limit but the narrow lanes having a single vehicle width which actually enter the village are subject to the national limit of 60 mph. Furthermore this fact is advertised on each of the lanes at the junctions with the main road as it is a legal obligation for the change to be signed. On narrow country lanes of single vehicle width 30 mph is the maximum which should be allowed for safety. These lanes often have high hedges, blind corners and hill summits which limit vision and are used by walkers, cyclists, horses, playing children and agricultural equipment. Anything faster than 30mph is inherently unsafe.

just done it as we have the same in our village they race past our yard like looneys and when i pull out of my drive its always risky and for our liveries going out for hacks !!!

Why not get together with others in your village and campaign to get the local authorities to introduce a Quiet Lane Scheme where pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders have priority over motorised vehicles and the speed limit is reduced.

The Transport act of 2000 gave new powers to local authorities enabling them to designate areas as quiet lanes where walkers cyclists and horse-riders are given greater priority and speed limits are reduced.

Further details are available from The Council fo the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) Warwick House 25 Buckingham Palace Road London SW1W 0PP Telephone: 020 7976 6433 Fax: 020 7976 6373 Email info@cpre.org.uk Web site www.cpre.org.uk

Hope this helps and let me know how you get on.

We have the same situation. Our road leads off a very busy A road. The A road has a 50 limit because there is a hamlet on it, then there is a de-restriction sign on to our road, which has nearly as many houses and is a lot narrower. Mad!

Im going to go against the grain here im afraid.

I think in theory it is a good idea but.......

The people who would most need to abide by the new slower speed limit ie the boy racer types would be the ones to ignore it, and still cause danger on the country bends

whilst it would just make life alot slower for the people who already show care and consideration on the roads.and takes bends at a reasonable speed

We have a lot of country roads round here and if you had to drive at 30mph all the way round youd be there all day

Agree with the speed limit change on the narrow roads.

Disagree with the children playing on the roads though, what parent would let their kid play on the road?!?!

thanks for that - just signed - 2 days ago i went to the police station to report the contractors now starting to cut hay, rape, ect. they come down our narrow country lanes at a hell of a speed and with the blind corners someone nearly got killed on their horse last year as their stopping distance with the heavy machinery on the back is not good. also the traffic to the little industrial units at the top of the land that we need to ride on is a race track between 8.30 - 9.00 in the morning - police said they 'will have a word but cant really do much as there is no speed limit!!!' But would you believe they gave me a warning as someone had banged the top of a speeding car with thier whip recently and was threatened with prosecution! WHAT A MAD WORLD WE LIVE IN!!!!!

I disagree - the speed limit is not the only thing people should use to judge their speed. It is a factor - you shouldn't exceed it, but there is no obligation to reach it. Drivers also have a duty to have regard to the conditions of the road and to use an appropriate speed for those conditions.

There are stretches of "narrow" lanes where 60 might be appropriate (i.e. straight with no junctions/hedges for a couple of miles), there are blind bends where you need to be doing 15 - the appropriate speed will vary massively over a very short distance and you can hardly have a constantly variable limit signpost. On a slightly more practical view - how would the police enforce the speed limit - they can't put in a speed trap using a vehicle because that would block the road and a speed camera needs a straight bit of road to work on - the safe bit where people might be able to make up time.
I don't think a reduced speed limit would do anything to stop people who have that callous a disregard of the road conditions and potential for there to be cyclists/pedestrians - you still get people doing 40+ in the centre of towns - why would people like that treat a country lane speed limit any different.

Oh, and I guess that the farmers/contracts are desperate to get their crops in while they can, before they get ruined by rain and they have nothing to sell/feed their animals with.

our yard is also on a country lane which does have a speed limit of 30 mph and school signs either end as there is a nursery school right next door, but they still drive at 50 plus and the worst offenders ??...the nursery mums...

If the speed limit is reduced to say 20 m.p.h. then anyone driving over that speed can be prosecuted. If they have an accident and have been travelling over the speed limit then it is easy to prosecute them.

We have had numerous speed checks on the lanes around us and it does the trick. It slows down the motorists as none of them want speeding tickets and points on their licences. Get the speed limit reduced. I've told you how to do it so have a go and enjoy safer riding.
