Just picked my horse Jack up from the vets after his operation. Not successful at all in that there wasn't anything they could do for him so I just have to accept that he is a lame arthritic 8yr old.

I've not got the bill yet either so don't yet know if my bank balance is taking a bashing as my insurance money is beginning to run out.

The vet said that after his box rest I should give him bute and if he's sound on this start hacking out but I'm not holding out much hope on this. So I'm in the market to look for another horse again.

Oh dear. Sorry to hear this. My horse had an arthroscopy on his hock recently and it seems (touch wood) to have worked. Bill was around £1800 including all aftercare.

Poor Jack.

Are they certain it is arthritis?
I kind of know how this feels. My TB was diagnosed as having arthiritis in his coffin joints when he was 8yrs old. We tried joint injections etc but he remained intermittently lame for the next 8 months. Vet was talking about arthroscopy but then decided to get an MRI done to confirm diagnosis as the changes weren't that bad. Turns out my boy actually has collateral ligament damage. The outcome isn't much better, he's now 9yrs old and will hopefully be my hack in another few months. We were lucky the insurance paid for the MRI before time expired. Sending big hugs.
