So we took Tom in today for a lameness work up and scan. By the time he'd done 3 lengths of the yard the poor lady vet (who saw him yesterday) was thoroughly confused. he kept switching which leg he was lame on, and what tiny bit of swelling that had been there yesterday was not gone! She called for her colleague Phil who came and watched (my friend Lynne who rides out for us sometimes works there and was doing the running for Phil). Phil thought it looked like his hocks and so decided we would do nerve blocks on one side to work it out. nerve blocked left hind fetlock, trotted him up, still lame bilaterally. then sedated him, xrayed his hocks and then nerve blocked the hock on the same side. trotted him up and he was only lame on the off side.
phil went to look at the xrays while Tom came round, poor lynne was going dizzy from walking circles with him! When he came back Phil said that it looks like Tom has been larking about in the field or been in some deep going somewhere and put more strain on the spavins that we already knew were in there. He's got a few days on bute, a bit of box rest and then bring him back into work.
so not nearly the bad news we thought it was going to be, but the vets bill will make up for it i'm sure!
