Hi guys

My mare had ovary scan yesterday. She has lots of follicles in each ovary, the vet has prescribed regumate for 15 days to kick start a season and clear the follicles through. He said she may need a couple of cycles of this.

Has anyone had experience of this? Do you know what causes it and do they get better?

Cheers for your help

Any reasonably fertile (and relatively young) mare WILL have a fair few follicles on each ovary during the season - and with some mares, the season lasts 12 months. The relatively mild winter means more mares are staying on cycle. (Last week my rider took my young stallion up the drive past some mares - and 9 out of 11 were lined up along the fence squatting and squirting! It really did his head in!)

You PROBABLY don't need the Regumatre to clear the follicles - unless any of them were VERY large. Was there a reason for the scan? Have there been any behavioural problems?

She has had poor performance since early summer. Initially had hind gut inflammation, was scoped too which was clear. Treated with diet change and succeed was doing really well then symptoms came back about 5 weeks later so vet decided to scan her ovaries. She has never been a forward going horse in the arena, I thought she just didn't like schooling, but then she started to knock poles and refuse to jump. Then she refused to go cross country which she loves so had tests from then. Was first scoped in September. Had full lameness work up, teeth, back etc... When she was feeling better she was like a different horse, forward going and enjoying her schooling. But she isn't now. Vet decided to scan ovaries and developed very sore lumbar spine and HATES having her saddle put on. I think she has had something for a long time that got worse in the summer. She hated her right ovary being palpated yesterday, good job she was in the stocks or the vet would have been in trouble. Have never seen her kick out like she did when he touched it.
