My miniature poodle x has a retained testicle. My dog groomer noticed it. He is 7 months old and there is no sign of the other one. Has anyone had any experience of this? How do they castrate? I've been told it's fairly common in small dogs and nothing to worry about.....

My IG had one retained, it meant that when he was castrated, they had to make 2 incisions. It also meant a bigger bill .

It wasn't a problem and the vet wasn't concerned about it :).

A retained testicle can cause cancer, so it needs to be removed, you could wait a couple more months, but the chances are it would have dropped by now if it was going to. It depends where it is how big an incission will be! It's also hereditary, so make sure his parents aren't bred again.

Sweep had this - the vet waited until he was a year old before castrating him in case it dropped - the risk of cancer is much higher but he was always going to be done anyway:) the op took a few minutes longer and cost about 30 quid more but he wasn't affected in any other way ie no big scar or extras stitches etc
