Just wondered if anybody here had ever needed to ask a yard to hold a stable for them? How much did you pay the yard owner and was this charge refundable? Thankies!
I had to pay when my mare was at stud and I paid the normal weekly amount as if she was there. It was not refundable and I would expect most yards to be the same.
It depends what sort of a livery yard it is. On a DIY yard you should pay DIY costs for the period of time. If it's full livery then you should expect to pay a fair percentage of the normal cost of livery as the YO is losing out on valuable business.
I've never heard of it being refunded- I think thats sort of defeating the point
When my horse has been away for schooling (several weeks at a time), I have continued to pay my normal DIY costs (stable and grazing). She wouldn't have a stable to come back to otherwise!
I'm on part livery (everything except grooming & riding) & they charge £50 per week to retain the box (as opposed to the normal £92)
They still have fixed cost & staff to pay, but obviously don't have to provide feed, hay & bedding, hence the reduction.
I think this is very fair way to do it.
We've had a stable on hold for the past month in case my mare's trial period didn't work out, and we pay normal weekly rate for the stable. The charge isn't refundable.
We used to get charged a retainer of £20 per month during the summer when the horses were out so you were guaranteed the same stable when winter came round.
I'm currently paying £45 per week (I'm on DIY at a full livery yard) to keep my empty stable at my yard. I went up the other day to pick some things up and my stable has been used.....I was not a happy bunny!
mine does it-when i away on grass keep or on holiday(as horses go to trainer), at half rate of DIY as not trashing field /stable etc.....
Just asking why would this charge would be refundable????????? as you paying to keep stable and field vacant etc.... As YO would make more if they re-let..
. Some yards charge full whack, some charge stable rent but knock off feed/bedding/turnout etc costs. Also it sometimes depends on situation, when my horse was PTS and I retained the stable until I bought another horse I didn't get charged anything because my YM is nice and because she had a pony to stick in the stable for a bit.
