How do people with retirees keep them a good weight in spring / summer. My 20 year old tb gets a huge tummy very quickly in spring but this is the first year he's retired so not sure how to keep him a good weight.

He lives out 24/7 and the grass is good in his field. I could take him for short walks but nothing too far as his legs aren't great although it will probably do him good to get walking.

Any suggestions other than a muzzle?

can you fence a bit of the field off and restrict grazing? i had to do this with my retired horse last year and ended up strip grazing him. he had a diseased stifle joint and couldnt do much in the way of exercise and normally balloned in the spring/summer but restricted grazing helped alot to keep his weight under control. it also helped my other (non-retired) horse who was kept with him as companion.
