just wondering how many of you keep horses as field ornaments at a livery yard. Or is it mostly people with their own land that do this ? Do you mind paying out lots of livery money for a horse thats not ridden ? Not being contentious here just interested !

Im willing to pay for my retired horse's livery as I bought him with the intention of keeping him for the rest of his life, and i certainly wasn't prepared to put him down just because he was of no use to me or to send him somewhere unsuitable just because it was cheap. Too many people just want rid of their horses when they can't be ridden anymore and i think it's totally shirking responsibilities.

I have two field ornaments. I'm lucky that I keep them at home, but I would pay livery for them if I had to. I've had them a long time and owe them a happy retirement.

I keep my retired mare at home but if necessary I would happily pay livery for her. She enjoys life and the company of her pals, loves attention and is a thoroughly nice person. She owes me nothing and will have a home for life wherever we go.

I have a 16yr old TB currently on full livery. I have a wonderful sharer who helps me so much with him, but I am thinking ahead to when he is retired.

I'll either leave him there and be broke every month, or bring him closer to home and have him on DIY that I do myself.

He's given me lovely years of fun and affection so I shall return that when he is old and grey!

At the moment I have my own yard, but before that I have kept my retired mare on livery and would again if I had to - she owes me nothing and has a home for life.

Ditto this :) I love my girls, and am more than happy to look after, and pamper them in their retirement :)

my mother in law has two field ornaments. One at home who's only youngish but not able to be ridden and one 29yo ex racer on diy livery. She's 78 and stuggles herself but, as above, she says that they've given her so much joy it's up to her to give them as much back as she can.

I have three, one 6 one 19 and one 34.

Although non are actually retired and all can be ridden the older two do very little these days.

They are all on livery, it would seem unfair to seperate them, although I do consider it when the bill comes every month. They are also used to being spoilt and in every night, they would not take well to 24/7 turnout, especially in winter.

The two oldies have earned the right to be kept for the rest of their lives, even when they cant be ridden anymore.

Mine is retired and on a nice expensive livery yard. Yes, I do grumble at the cost but I wouldn't change it. She's been with me for 14 years and has a home for life. I don't have my own land, so a livery yard it is.

I have 2 retired boys, im lucky there kept at home but i wouldnt quibble at all if i had to pay livery for them. There very spoilt & cost me just as much as my ridden horse, i tend to keep horses for life so i try to make sure when i take a horse on i can afford to keep it in the life it's become acustom to even if it means it's retired.

Yes, my old horse was on DIY livery for the three years she was retired before I lost her. She was 28 and I didn't resent it at all, I'd owned her for 14years and at least owed her a retirement.

My mum's old horse is 33 and is retired at their own yard...... She's owned her since 1984!
