Hi,
My older mare is now retired and this will be first year she has not being clipped. She has a thick coat and has recently started to sweats up at night whilst stabled.
Has anyone else found this recently? And would I be better to clip her a little starting with the lower neck.

it wouldnt do any harm to give her maby just a little bib clip. it would just help to keep her cool without her getting cold outside.

hope this helps!

if she's retired, why on earth would you want to clip her? put on a very light rug if you have to put one on at all. maybe all she needs is a rainsheet unless it's bitterly cold. and with no windchill in the stables, if she's got a good coat and a good bed, i
wouldn't rug her.
did you see the brilliant detailed post on here the other day about why horses are perfectly adapted to cold whether (unlike humans)? i saved it, it was so good. can pm it if you like.

She is unrugged and still sweats a little over night. I suppose it will stop when it gets cooler. I thought a little neck clip might be enough to stop the sweating as it will grow out quite quickly.
I missed the article about adaption to cold. My little exmoors are very wooly and happly live out unrugged.

Can I have it please

Apparently after doing research horses can adapt their body temps to -21 degrees

!Go on shoot me,i think if i am tooked up roasty in bed he can have a huge thick rug on,lol!!My baby though been with me since 8mnth old!!

She is older and will grow a thicker winter coat anyway, leave her as when the weather really turns she will need it,it has been mild recently but that wont last!!!

Sweating could be an indication of other health problems so whilst clipping may make her more comfortable it could be worth getting her overall health checked maybe with the next set of jabs.

Mealies - I have recently taken on a rescued native mare with significant liver damage from ragwort poisoning. About 3 weeks or so ago (coinciding with her winter coat coming in)she started sweating up in the stable big time (she has to be in during the day, out at night due to excessive photosensitivity from the liver damage) just standing there not even moving! I was so worried it could have been a symptom of advancing liver failure that I contacted Professor Knottenbelt of Liverpool Uni who is a world expert on ragwort poisoning. He advised that there are many, many owners whose hairy natives are sweating like pigs at the moment due to having fabulously thick winter coats in an unseasonably warm October. I wouldn't worry but, on veterinary advice, I am putting electrolytes in her feed...I'm using Formula 30 but the vet said anything with chlorine in is fine - you can make your own with 50% table salt and 50% Lo-Salt. I'm trying to do a low trace clip but she is deeply suspicious of just about everything humans do to her so - as I don't want to have to sedate her - I'm taking it very, very slowly and have so far just snipped the shaggy hair under her chin with scissors! Could take a while!!! Try not to worry...I bet when the REAL winter sets in she'll be just fine.
