Does anyone know what happens to police horses when they retire? Are there centres that they go to? Are they available for adoption? Are they...disposed off?

Thanks!

We spoke to the police when they where doing a display at YHL last year. They do re-home the horses but they said you have to remember that they often find it hard to settle into a more relaxed way of life.

A lot are rehomed...especially the younger ones who are healthy but for some reason aren't suiting police life. I think they're also offered to their riders/grooms for rehoming in the first instance (although I think they have to purchase them).

Afraid I don't know about retired police horses, but am definitely a bit obsessed with them!
Went to the St George's Day Parade round the Square Mile last Friday - only to see the horses. Have a look at these beauties - especially the one giving a definite smile for the camera!

Our Black shire x started training to be a police horse in the early 1980s. (He's 33 years old now). He was involved in some sort of traffic incident we believe during this time, which meant he didn't finish his training. He has a deep scar on his shoulder which is from that accident. We bought him after he'd done a stint as the local hunt secretary's horse 26 years ago. He was a fab horse. He's very arthritic now and no longer ridden, but he's having a good retirement now.

There is one at the yard i keep my horse. He retired from the force becasue he has uvitius. He actually belongs to a horse rescue, and the livery has him on a loan from them. Has had him for a long time now.
