My horse has been out on loan for the last 5 months but due to personal reasons, the girl who has has just informed me that she has got to give him back to me.

The trouble is that, due to work commitments I know that I'm going to struggle looking after him when he returns to me. At the moment, I don't know what to do. I would ideally like to sell him but I had him up for sale last year with no luck (he is 18 now).

I'm not sure if I would like to loan him out again in case the same thing happens and I don't want him moving from place to place.

My other option is to find a yard that does full or possibly retirement livery. Does anyone know of anywhere suitable in the Cleveland/North Yorkshire area?

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you

Is he still rideable and do you still enjoy riding?

If so, look for full livery. Even if you only have time to ride a couple of times a week, they can care for him in between and he'll have a good life

While some people wholly disagree with full livery, ive used it for a past 5 years and would never ever go back. I dont work, but i do have other commitments and i like the fact that with full livery, someone is always there to watch over him. He has a great life, he loves the staff, they keep his routine good and although ive not been able to ride for nearly a week now due to another sick pet; i know he'll be perfectly happy and fine

18 isnt old, but it sems these days that people think anything over 12 is old. Is he sound? Is there any reason he needs to be retired? The main reason i ask is that once you take the step and actually retire them, many seem to almost give up and start to waste away.

Thanks for you comments. Yes he is rideable, he has bone spavin but if fine hacking around.

Since he has been out on loan I have enjoyed having a 'normal' life and not having to worry about going to the stables every day and having the hassle of the farrier stading me up time & time again, etc. I work 6 days a week so I didn't have the time to enjoy my horse as I should, in winter I would only get to ride once a week if that. Also, before he went on loan my friend had a horse and we used to share the responsibility of looking after them both, which made things a lot easier.

Retirement livery was just one of the options I was looking at as I know he would be very happy just chilling out all day in a field and after looking at the prices they don't seem too much different to what I would expect to pay for full livery.

Just dont rule full livery out

I know what you mean about enjoying a life and nor should you feel bad for that

I adore my yard. I write his name on a board when he needs shoes and someone else sorts it. Same deal if he needs the chiro / osteo.

They put him on the walker, they muck him out, hes fed everyday at the same time, hes turned out in the indoor school, hes walked out for grazing and hes groomed and put onto the solarium.

If i cant get up, i dont have to feel bad or guilty because hes absolutly fine. It can take a while to find somewhere where you can really trust the staff, but when you do, its great.

I really hope you find something that suits both of you

what about rehoming through veteran horse society if you yearn the non horsey life??
If he is rideable and doesnt want to reite, they will find him an appropriate home??

Howlbeck Farm in guisborough have a big turn away field??
Cud get you the number from a friend if you want........
Also think they do full livery???

Id love to help, my farm is full though as I am struggling with all horsey jobs and full time work............

I've had a look at the vetran horse society but wasn't sure if they rehomed horses for people or just took in rescue cases. I am looking at selling or loaning him out again once he comes back to me as I really just can't manage time wise. Summer is OK but by the time winter comes around again I wouldn't be able to cope.

Because I have owned my horse for 7 1/2 years now, I wouldn't be able to just sell him to anyone. I have to know that he is going to a good home or I wouldn't be able to part with him. I might give the vetran horse society a call and see if they can help.

Unitl then, I have found out that there may be a stable coming up at my old place in Guisborough so I'm probably take him there. There's only 3 horses there and he knows 2 of them already so it woun't be so disrupting for him being moved again.

Thanks for you advice.

hi, a lady at my last yard rehomed one of her ponies through them and i think they do part of the vetting to make sure the home is a good one.

Which farm is it you plan to go back to??
My boy is at guisborough too.

Good luck with whatever you decide. xxxxxxxxx
