Retirement home- Too good to be true?

Ive seen an advert, someone (a private home) is advertising very cheap grass keep and that they will do the daily care, rugs, feed, poo picking etc as they have two horses and need a companion for the one that's retired and gets left alone at home.
Its about an hour, just under from me so I wont really be able to visit, for this reason ive not taken this enquiry any further but what do you think?
Ive seen such horror stories re- retirement livery type arrangements but this sounds like a genuine offer from someone.

Am I gullible!
 
i will be offering a similar sort of thing from mid september, either full or part livery, living out with my 6yr old mare as she needs company i will be doing it cheap
 
I just need one of thes genuine offers to come up closer to me as im not wanting to actually properly give him up just find him a nicer place to chill!
 
I have an ex riding school star star as a companion no money changes hands owner pays complex vet stuff me day to day and wormers etc. He is a joy to know and at 21 still as cute and cheeky as they come. Some of us do need companions to keep a non ridden horse company and we look after them and love them as our own.
 
I thought for a minute that you had seen my ad, as that's almost exactly what I said in one I just placed, except that I only have one horse. In my case, it's entirely genuine, and I am being very selective about who I will invite to come and live at my new yard, as it's very important to me that Alf has a companion who won't pick on him, flirt with him, or gallop aroud too much! I've had a lot of responses, and am meeting two people at the weekend, one wanting grass livery, and the other full livery - fingers crossed that they are both nice people with nice horses, and it all works out well. I am DYING to move Alf to my new place - so exciting!

Me? No it's a random one because everything I chose was taken! Wish I'd tried harder now ha!
Well I messaged them and we spoke. She sounds really lovely and genuine but my gelding becomes clingy with mares as does her ridden gelding so poor little companion mare would have too much hassle in my opinion and I can't guarantee my boy won't start fighting over her. It's also just too far. I want him a nice field etc but I still want to be in his life as much as I can so it's not for us.
 
Why wouldn't you be able to visit? I think it is unreasonable to send a horse away for retirement and not visit, particularly when the journey is less than an hour. Enquire further as it might be just what you are looking for. If it were me I would be keen to visit at least once a month if not more..
 
Visiting would be difficult as I work seven days a week some days split hours etc. Yes I can go one a month but for me personally that's not enough. I have made more enquiries but horse wise it's not a suitable set up for my particular horse. Fab opportunity for someone else though.
 
Please be extremely careful. I know of one person answered an advert like this (companion for a driving horse) and it turned out to be a pack of lies, the place was a dealers yard and her horse was sold almost immediately on to a mum with two young children - the horse had been put into a retirement home because it was seen to have a couple of bad seizures. The dealer claimed it had been jumping competitively despite it having spent the previous year being a plod for the lady's novice husband. Some enquiries revealed the dealer was doing the little scam regularly. His trick was to offer a nominal £100 for the animals as a goodwill gesture.
 
I have a horse here who I keep for nothing as he is an ideal comanion to my youngster. His owner pays any vets bills, and I expect I could have asked for trims and wormers too but it suits me this way. Owner visits when he wants.
