Retirement livery? does it exist?

We're moving to our new house soon and will have the luxury of extra land for the horses. I currently only have 2 boys at the moment, but possibly some youngsters coming from Mum. I have lots of grazing (20 acres)and stabling but no facilities so I'm thinking of offering keep and care to older horses (have worked as vet nurse so confident with 'care of the elderly').

Does anyone know anyone else who offers this kind of service? What would be a fair charge? Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help!!

Retirement livery does indeed exist, & you're looking at costs similar to full livery. As a rule retirement livery owners are absent owners so you have to put in to place arrangements for vet & farrier etc, so that you can call out when you feel necessary & owner will pick up the bill. That has to be tied up quite tightly in a contract or yoiu may end up with huge vets bill & no recourse to the owner. You also need to stipulate that if more than two months (or however long you feel) goes by with no contact & no payment you reserve the right to have the right to have the horse PTS. A farmer I know has looked after two elderly ponies for years now as owner disappeared. He has no option but to look after them (he would anyway) or get done for neglect & he can't have them PTS unless its on welfare grounds as they're not his !!

I have 2 on retirement livery in Cheshire. I pay £35pw per hores for grass livery - but its a "full" livery service, and includes all feed, haylage, holding for vet, farrier etc. Daily checks and a weekly groom. Yes - I'm broke!!

The same service but stabled at night is £90pw.

When you have a broken pony / golden oldie, the kind of service you are offering is invaluable. My Tom (the coloured in my sig) would have been PTS if I hadn't found Nicola.

Mind you, knowing they're safe and happy doesn't stop the tears every time I see them - I know, I know ....
