Retirement Livery

I am looking into offering more services on my livery yard such as a retirement/rest/rehab livery and wondered if people on here could tell me what they would look for in these services. Also what you would expect to pay?

Finally if people think there is a market for it and perhaps how I would go about attracting that market?

I'm looking into this at the moment for my older horse.

What I am looking for in general is the following -

- 24/7 turnout in summer with a herd of similar age (20yrs+)
- Checked on twice a day (rugs changed if necessary)
- One feed a day so he gets his supplements
- The ability for me to come down at any time (9am-5pm) without having to give any special notice
- To have a stable overnight in the winter.


I would probably expect to pay in the summer about £35-£45 a week, these seem to be the average prices in Cheshire. Then maybe about £60 a week in the winter when he has a stable.

I would say that there would be a need for such places going on from other posts, I think the problem would be in the price people would actually want to pay for it.

thanks for your replys thats fab. I have had a couple of enquiries for a retirement livery but I think some people expect to get a good service for there old horse but pay next to nothing! I like to offer as best a service and fee as possible bearing in mind the costs involved etc, im certainly not out to rip any one off!!

we are in the same situation, however it does seem that a few people out there want everything for nothing...
We are just waiting to hear about how i could affect our insurance etc to see if it will be worth offering it or not.

If I were looking for retirement livery I'd be looking for 24/7 turnout on sufficient acreage and within a herd. Field to have either manmade or good natural shelter.
Through the winter I'd expect adlib ay/haylage in the field and daily checks.
Rugged if required through the winter and feet trimmed regularly.
Would prob expect to pay around £20-25 pw plus additional feed and forage costs.
