Retirement Livery

I was wondering if anyone has sent their horse to be looked after at a yard that offers retirement livery? My horse is 17 and I am considering selling him due to my circumstances changing. As he is older I am really concerned that I am not going to be able to find him a good home and would hate the idea of someone buying him then selling him on after a year or two.

I have owned him for 7 years now and am obviously very attached to him. The only other solution I could think of would be to find a retirement home for him where he would be well cared for, for the rest of his life.

Has anyone sent their horse to a place like this or could anyone recommend anywhere suitable?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My mare is on retirement livery in Cornwall on a lovely farm. I pay about £40 a week for livery plus feet trims and worming. I would definitely recommend it as my mare gets a lovely life in a huge field which she certainly wouldn't get on a crowded DIY yard. I was considering loaning or selling her but I'd heard so many horror stories about horses disappearing and being sold on etc. I decided not to. I'll PM you the yard's number if you are interested.
 
Retirement livery often means being turned away and not working any longer, 17 is quite young for that if still sound - and of course there is an ongoing cost to you.

There are horror stories about loaning, but for each horror story there is another good tale of horses and ponies that have gone on to wonderful homes and been treated very well even beyond a time when they can be ridden so I wouldn't discount this option.

The key to loaning is to find someone you can trust by word of mouth, not by advertising
 
Thanks to the people who replied and also sent me messages.

My horse doesn't need to be retired as I use him for hacking around on regularly at the moment. He just can't be jumped anymore due to having bone spavin. The only reason I need to sell him or find livery for him is due to lack of time. He could give someone years of enjoyment but I'm really not sure if I would be able to find a good home for him. I do have him advertised for sale at the moment but have had no interest in him.

It's a difficult decision, as I said before, I am very attached to him and need to know that he is going to have a good home for the rest of his life. I'm sure he would be extremely happy retiring early and chilling out in a field all day
