Hi

Has anyone ever put a horse on retirement livery - what sort of price and for what services were you charged? Any recommendations? I am struggling to find grass livery for my old boy and he must live out 24/7 so I am considering a retirement place, at least temporarily as he is on a year's field rest due to a ligament injury. I am based near Milton Keynes and would rather he didn't go too far away. Alternatively could consider full grass livery which I have heard of - again, any recommendations please?

Thanks!

There are places that run this sort of thing I've wondered about it but TBH decided I'd be the best person to see my old girl into retirement.

I fail to see how they can offer better rates than say a full livery. I'd look for somebody local who was prepared to look after him into retirement with you picking up the tab. If you were more local I'd offer you some of my paddock but TBH it'll set you back £200 per month with insurance etc

Try Jen_Kelly. She's got a super place and just wants to love a horse, having lost Kelly to Cushing's. They are on the Wales/Cheshire border. Very reasonable and 10 star care. Alternatively, a friend let hers go to Nicky van Dyke (sp) at Sennybridge in Wales. Now her place is heaven on earth for oldies and they live in small herds and want for nothing. PM me for her no. if you are interested.

You have got me thinking. I have just put in an offer on a small cottage in Lincolnshire, but it does come with 11 acres of fenced land and 4 stables. I have 3 horses at home, with the prospect of a one eyed Cleveland Bay brood mare (don't ask), who will live out, so have spare room. I suppose I just never thought people would actually pay for retirement turnout, but it might be a possibility for a small supplementary income. I wouldn't want too many, just one or two would be enough.I would worry about people bringing you their horse and initially paying all well and good, but then losing interest and sort of "forgetting" to pay, such that you are left with a herd of elderly or crocked horses, which may need a lot of vet care, but I suppose you could say in a contract that if you didn't contact me every six months or so, I reserve the right to have the horse PTS if you didn't pay. Hard headed, I know, but it would be a business arrangement, however hard it would be. I suspect I wouldn't actually do it! I think there is at least one person on the forum who does retirement livery; they might be useful to ask.

i just want the best for my old boy and he absolutely cant be stabled and grass livery seems to be as rare as hen's teeth round here. what else can i do with him? i'd love to see him through his retirement looking after him myself, but with no-where to keep him it's just not possible. wherever he ends up i plan to continue to visit regularly and still look after all his needs. cost is not a worry (within reason) - i can quite afford to keep him through his retirement, i just need somewhere to do it. i cannot afford my own land unfortunately.

I know of a yard quite close to MK where they do cheap grass livery. The yard isn't the flashiest around but they have loads and loads of land! Please pm me if you are interested!

Hi Hun. You have been most helpful to me in the past and I would willingly help you, but dont think you would want to travel that far! Let me know if you get stuck. Hx

I sent my horse to retirement in Cornwall. (i'm in Enfield) He had the most amazing, loving care and was finally put to sleep last October. They were totally fab, and I couldn't speak highly enough of the care my horse recieved.
