I have returned to riding after over 20 years and have just had to purchase a new hat because mine no longer meets the current standards. I have been wearing a size 2 at the stables where I am having lessons and yesterday had a bit of a road trip to find a shop to buy a new one! I had my head measured and tried on various different styles but lots of them had a big gap in the back (the fitter could put their hand in!) I managed to find a Charles Owen that I thought fitted perfectly but now I have got it have realised it is a size 1 1/2 so smaller than the one I've been borrowing! I'm worried that it is now going to be too tight and I'm going to have a thumping headache after lessons or am I just panicking and should trust that it's been fitted properly so therefore correct and safe? Help!?!?

If it's been fitted properly don't worry. Depending on the type of hat your size can vary. For example my head fits Champion hats perfectly, but if I try and fit in a Charles Owen (or similar) they always feel too loose! Plus, the padding wears down after a while, so it will get slightly looser with wear. Did it feel extremely tight when you tried it? If you're really worried get your instructor to have a look at it before your next lesson :)

Thank you Amye it doesn't feel extremely tight but more snug than the one I've been borrowing which was a Champion I think. I have been wearing it around the house so hopefully will get used to it!
