My girl is allowed to start walking today after having 5 weeks paddock rest for a fractured splint bone on her left hind as a result of a kick. They are turned out for between 4 and 6 hours per day.

Vet advised 6 weeks to get back to full work so am planning on walking for 20 minutes to start with for first 2 weeks and then gradually introduce trot. This time of year is a pain as I can only hack at weekends due to the light.

My question is how many days a week do I walk her. When in full work she gets 1 day off completely and 1 day of light work and 5 of hacking/schooling. We do have a horse walker as well.

What would you do?

My mare is on box rest and has been since end of July, she ended up having surgery in Oct due to a tear in the left hind Flexor Tendon. I am , and have been, walking her every day in hand since end of Oct. We started off at 10 mins a day and have now built it up to 30 mins and the last few days I have started to incorperate a few mins of trot. I now have to build this up to 30 mins of trotting before she can be turned out again but the vets say she probaly wont be out until Jan/ Feb time. Ours is going to be a very long slow process but as long as gets 100% better from it Im really not bothered, We both have all the time in the world and to be honest I am really enjoying the one to one time with her while we are walking around the yard/schools

Hope your gets better soon and all goes well for you both
