Has anybody had any experience of using the anti inflammatory drug Rheumocam (meloxicam)?

I'm asking as my vet has just prescribed this to my pony mare who suffers from a TMJ (jaw) problem. She had the joint injected about 6/8 weeks ago and has been fine since on half a bute a day, however they seem to have worn off and although vets suggestion was to repeat them I cannot afford to keep having injections done especially if this is how long each time (and pony is not insured).

She seems to have gone downhill quite quickly so on vets suggestion I increased the bute back up to loading dose at the weekend, but as i've had to decrease it back down to 1 or 2 a day she is still not comfortable. I believe my vet is hoping therefore that the Rheumocam will get on top of the inflammation to then go back to maintainence level of bute. At least I hope so - the Rheumocam seems comparatively extremely expensive. I haven't had chance to sit down and compare price per mg/ml but my initial feeling is that I couldn't afford to have her on it long term on the prescribed dose.

If anybody has used it before/does use it - did you find it more effective than bute, and was it noticeably effective quite quickly? And did it work in the short term or did you have to use it continuously as is often done with bute? If using long term is it possible to decrease the dose when the full dose is not required? The main reason I ask this is that it is prescribed in an amount per kg of horse, and I thought it may not work at all if given under this amount?

I will be talking to my vet on monday to update as to whether the Rheumocam has proved more effective than bute or not, but in the mean time
any experiences at all would be gratefully received as I have no experience of this drug at all and can find very little on it from searches on here or online in general.

Thank you

Haven't used it in horses, but the feline version, metacam, is very effective in cats. I would give it a go. Certainly in cats it can be used long term (for arthritis), but I only have short term experience, for injury.

Haven't used with horses but my collie is on it for arthritis and it definetly makes a big difference however I can see it being expensive for a horse. She gets the 20kg dose and it's £50 for a bottle that lasts about 3 months

Thank you everyone,

It does seem that the equine version is quite new to the market so i'm struggling to find much information on past results. Hearing how effective it seems to be with cats and dogs is positive to hear, and my vet seemed to think it would be stronger than bute (and seeing she is on 2/3 per day - he must think it will be equally or more effective than this). If it works for my mare it will hopefully be temporary as it is extremely expensive, but I will see how we get on over the next few days before thinking too far ahead.

Thanks again for the replies, if anyone else has any experiences I would love to hear them.

It isn't that new, I started using it for my mare more than 2 years ago. I can't compare it with anything else as it was impossible to use any of the alternatives for her. I would say it worked pretty well, was palatable if rather smelly but pricey. I bought it on-line, ordering the largest bottles available which lasted about 2 weeks each.

Thanks fatpiggy, vet receptionist mentioned to me when I went to collect it that she hadn't heard of it before so it not have been around long but I guess not that new then.

Glad to hear it worked quite well for you, if you don't mind me asking did you use it quite long term? And yes, if I could've waited longer I would've ordered online and will be doing this in the future if required as I know it will work out cheaper. Was quite shocked if i'm honest at the cost considering it will only last me 2 weeks so fingers crossed it works!

Yes, it was at least 2 years and that was after using Arquel for even longer but the makers ceased producing it :( No problems at all. I used to order from VetMedsPlus as they were the cheapest and service was excellent.
