Rhinegold rugs?

Was terrible on my cob (HW with huge shoulders), front wouldn't meet - was about 3 inches apart

My sons new pony came with an entire wardrobe of them and have to say that they are the worst fitting rugs I have seen, and he has hardly any mane left as a result of the neck covers, which seem to very tight. He is a 14.2hh connie x and not an 'odd' shape…

For value for money rugs I personally rate the Shires range for cobs, and have these for two of ours. Weatherbeeta's are also a good fit on cobs but have recently become very pricey, which is a shame.

I was looking at the shires rugs in a horsey catalogue.. There seems to be a few different types. How do you rate the tempest range?

Both of mine and daughter's, all New Foresters are in rhinegold me all fit well, so far no rubbing, amazingly no rips. (Bet I will regret saying that)

I have never had a problem with anything in the Tempest, or the whole Shires range for that matter. Good value for money, don't rip easily, warm, not a leak in sight and really durable - oh, and also come in nice colours if you care about that kind of thing! Highly recommended :)

i took a chance on one as they are cheap and every make of rug i ever put on my PRE fits really well..... except this one, terrible and all the lining wants to roll it's way out, buckles are cheap and it's a strange fit on his chest. sorry!!!!

I've got a couple of old (~8 years or so) rhinegold stable rugs that are pretty good, not sure about the newer style ones. However, I always go back to shires, especially for turnouts!

Cheap and they do a job but as others have said they are the worst fitting rugs I have come across. love all my horseware rugs and weatherbeetas. Also have had some good shires for the ponies that are cheap.

I haven't used them for years, the quality wasn't that good & the fit was awful.

If you want a fairly cheap rug that is true to size, deep in the belly & well made & fit well then try an 'Axiom'. They are sold on Ebay. I've bought several of different weights & they have been great. They've remained waterproof (I'm on my 3rd winter) & none of the clips have failed or broken. The rugs are still in as new condition. I don't think I've ever paid more than about £50 for one? They are great value. :)

I have a very broad (14hh square) Welsh. She has a Rhinegold summer sheet and that fits fine. It is cheap and cheerful and I don't expect it to last as well as some of my other rugs. No experience with any other types of Rhinegold rugs though sorry. She wears Shires turnout (I think it is the Typhoon) excellent fit and lovely rug. She also has two Shires stable rugs, one is the Tempest. I think the Tempest comes up a little smaller than their other rugs. The Shires tempest fly sheet in the same size as her other rugs I couldn't get done up across her chest. She also has a Chelsea lightweight turnout which fits nicely around her neck. We tried a Swish lightweight too and that was an ok fit and a nice rug (although I think the Shires are nicer). Her Shires rugs all wash really well too.

My other one wears a Weatherbeeta turnout that is 19 years old and on its fourth pony. Never tried it on my square one, I think she would find it a bit snug over her chest.

I find Weatherbeeta fits my chunky 14.1h cob mare really well, no pulling or rubbing in the chest and shoulders, but not so baggy it's hanging off!

Rhinegolds are rubbish IMO, even if they fit ( tb type not too chunky) the necks do a weird thing of folding in on themselves and the front velcro soon loses it's velcro! For quality and value for money it's weatherbeeta or shires for me and perfect fit for cobby types

Cheap, badly cut and poor quality.
Does it cost more to make a rug the correct shape?
Understand cheap rugs being poor quality materials but why poor cut?

Made abroad (Asia), massed produced by manufacturers rather than specialists in equine products (Saddlers)
I used to sell the Rhinegold stuff, got SO many back that were falling to bits after a few days on a horse, or leaked or didn't fit at all that I stopped selling them in the end.
The last straw was I bought in 10 outdoor rugs and 10 stable rugs, then I saw someone on ebay selling the same rugs LESS that the trade price.
Short of them being stolen stock I wondered how they could sell it for less than I paid for it from the wholesaler.
I found out via colleagues also in the trade, a ship container load had come over from Asia where they make the rugs, a few of the front buckles had surface rust on them, wholesaler rejected the whole container load (LOTS of rugs!). The manufacturer didn't want them back as too costly to ship back again, the wholesaler bought them dirt cheap and sold them off in jobs lots to ebayers who sold them on. Totally unfair to the traders such as myself who had a High Street tack shop and were struggling for survival.
That is Rhinegold rugs, you are welcome to them
All of Rhinegold range is made in India, whether it's saddles, rugs or bridles and they use Asian buckles and fittings.

Got a rhinegold for my h/w cob this winter. Not a good fit ,only just covers his belly. But has stayed waterproof and in on price. I would go for Shires or Axiom. I also got a gallop turnout rug for my polo pony this year .The Gallop rug is much better than the Rhinegold and was cheaper.

I've got the opposite opinion of most on this thread! Yes, Rhinegold are cheap but I've had several that've been going strong for a few years now on my cob. I found that the Shires Tempest while clearly better quality, hang down way too far and so I can't get the surcingles tight enough.

ETA I also like Gallop rugs - I must be a cheapskate ;)

Rhinegold were useless on my cob x mare. They twisted to one side horrendously, the lining tries to escape and pulls the neck cover down and they barely cover her belly which meant it looked like she was wearing a mini skirt! (she is a fit event horse, so its not like there is a lot to cover!), the leg straps lost their elastic almost immediately. Mine is now in storage as an emergency rug should any of mine shred their current rugs. I have found Shires fit brilliantly, never move or twist and have stayed completely waterproof on my tb who has worn it everyday this winter.
The best fit for my cob are Mark Todd rugs. They never move on her even when she throws herself around in the field and she never has any rub marks. I tend to wait for the rug sales and then stock up on them or look for second hand ones on eBay as they are fairly expensive otherwise.
