Rhodesian RidgeBacks??

Hello Peeps...

Don't EVER venture into here.. but have a few questions... as my LOVELY OH is buying me a puppy.... and I would like a RRidgeback... so...

Anyone got one?

Anyone know anyone that has one?

Does anyone know any breeders in the South of England? (I have seen zejak who's dogs look gorgeous)

Any other comments...

(I'm expecting lots of 'negative' comments... but we shall see!!

)

I haven't got one but I've met a fair number of the breed over the years!

Lovely breed & generally speaking, if you could manage a Rottie, you should be ok with a Ridgeback, as they have a not dissimilar outlook on life....fairly dominant character but placid & sensible until roused! LOL

Be warned however - a lot of the ones I've met in the UK have been very nervous & jumpy, a trait completely alien to the correct nature of the breed, so pick a breeder/puppy carefully!
They need a lot of socialisation with other dogs, people etc., as they can become undesirably over-protective otherwise & the males, naturally somewhat dominant by nature, can be very male-aggressive!

You will also need a gsoh, as they can be very stubborn on occasions! LOL Not an ideal 'first breed' but very rewarding & great fun for the more experienced dog owner!

Thankies for this info, OH already has a gorgeous doggy so the socialisation for that is fab.. plus there are 5 dogs at the yard.. as well as plenty of people... I also can g'tee that there will be plenty of people in/around the house etc.... so the socialisation/dominance shouldn't be an issue...

I have seen this webby.. www.zejakridgebacks.co.uk which look like nice breeders of sensible dogs.... we are going to arrange a visit to them and see if a Ridgeback is for us....

I always think with dogs .... it's all about when they are young.... I shall be taking it too puppy classes!!! Good learning for me and 'him' .. hehe!!

My old boss used to have one (It was a live in job so I had the fun of looking after him) and I knew somebody who bred them and bred my bosses pup. They're so soft! complete sweeties, but yes they need a hell of a lot of socialisation!

You lucky thing, I love ridgebacks! There is one at our livery yard who is great at looking like a fierce guard dog, but is also as soppy as anything. He is great with his owners 1 year old daughter.

He does roam quite a lot and will vanish down the lane if we don't keep an eye on him, and he has had a few spats with other visiting dogs, but I would expect that from a guarding breed on his own territory. He also barks at any new visitors, which is very useful on the yard!

I also knew a ridgeback a few years ago when I was at another yard who was just the same - soppy as anything - lovely dogs to have around

most of the ridgebacks we have over here are really big softies.

I have a ridgeback crossed with a working blue and tan kelpie (not intended I can assure you - bloody sl*t got out and decided to have 9 live puppies).

Most of the litter have taken after to ridgeback and they are very affectionate and (dare I say it

) dopey.

My girl has more of the kelpie side but she has the biggest ridge out of all the puppies.

Enjoy looking for that special puppy - it will always pick you

I wanted something that is clever but not manic!! which is why I choose the RB... they are GORGEOUS too... and I have loved them since the moment I saw them in Margarita (of all places!!)

...my friend used to have one. She could easily jump out of his garden over his six foot fence and used to do so frequently. Not good when he was on a night out and got phone calls from his neighbours telling him she'd come visiting again.

I had a friend who had a gorgeous RR, but she wasn't terribly obedient. She WAS excellent with the horses though and very affectionate.
Another RR (cross) I knew was a dangerous brute... BUT he'd been kennelled all his life so I expect that had an effect on his outlook...

Was your friends dog kenneled outside then?

[/ QUOTE ]OK thanks hun.... we intend to do the whole 'puppy training' classes with him (Or at least I do!!) and he will most definatley be living in the house with us and the other dog. xx

A friend of mine has a lovely Rhodesian Ridgeback - she has a fantastic temperament and is very placid

Only drawback is that she has had quite a few health problems so you might want to check that the line you buy a pup from is healthy.

When you do get your pup, I can recommend having a look at some of the training articles on this site:

We followed a similar approach with the Gercha and are really pleased with how she has turned out!
