I have recently come across rhythm beads and I am intrigued. As I understand it, they help your horse to find correct rhythms and can be used to help prevent a horse from spooking ... is this right? Have any of you used rhythm beads and with what measure of success, or do you see them as just another way to con us out of our money?!

I'm not sure what I make of them myself, so would be very interested in your thoughts ..

Many thanks
Ems

Piebaldsparkle, why would you say that and then not answer any of the OP question?

And OP I'm also interested as I've not come across them before.

i have two lots one was made personally for my boy and the second i won on a fb page they are fab!!! my boy is pretty spooky and when he wears them he listens to the bells rather than the big scarey stuff thats out to eat him so a definate thumbs up from me!! xx

I keep meaning to put mine on Ned when I go out, I'll try next time. I don't care if they make a difference or not :P they're pretty! (make them yourself, mine cost under £5 to make, but they're £20+ to buy!!)

Hey Em,

I have only ever heard of them being used to help a rider keep their ryhthm in the rising trot. Not heard of them being used for spooking, hopefully someone will be along soon who can help.

Hope all is well with you and the little Gremlin :D

Oooh ... making my own - I hadn't even thought about that! :D

Billie: Everything going fabulously (touches all available wood in case I've just jinxed myself!) Field gremlin (still makes me chuckle!) and I have just started to go for hacks - although I got lost today! hehehehehe! Perhaps a sat nav, instead of rhythm beads, is more of a requirement! chuckle.

Interesting that people have found them to be useful ... I quite fancy jingling my way down the road with a pretty pony!:p

Angelish: I can see your point of view. I wasn't sure if I was being conned by the whole Native American thing, or if they really were worthwhile. It's for a miniature shetland that I am doing bombproof training with for my 3 yr old daughter, and of course to make her look pretty! hehehehe!

They sound interesting. Does the horse "tune out" the spooky stuff because of the beads?

As I understand it, the horse tunes in to the gentle jingling of the bells and ignores the things that would generally make it spook - I'm guessing more of the 'horse eating bird' spooks than the 'ruddy great tractor' spooks!

That's the idea! They're supposed to help the horse focus on the relaxing rhythm of the beads and therefore help them to concentrate more on that / less on spooking.

I haven't used them myself but know somebody who swears by them as her horse is so much easier to ride with his necklace on!

ah well then, they may be useful to you then they will certainly look pretty on a childs pony ,ive just looked them up on ebay  how much :D

I thought £8 was pretty reasonable ... This expensive horsey world is obviously going to my head. If I see something for under £20 these days I automatically think "oh, bargain!" My poor (quite literally now!) husband! :D

here is some info i found on a page will explain better than i can they arent ''expensive rubbish'' they are fab and look beautiful on my 16,3 dark bay tb :)

Providing, a soft, musical ring as you ride, horse beads help you and your horse to relax, focus and find a rhythm, and of course they look beautiful too! There are even reports of spooky horses being calmed. For all riders, in particular the nervous, horse beads are a helpful way to get in tune with your horse. They can be a significant aid to concentration, helping horses from being distracted whilst out hacking or working in a school

I'm certain they help with spookiness.

My mare is 3 weeks back in work after 10 months off. The first week she was tense and spooky. So I ordered some beads as I thought I may aswell try.
2 days after ordering the beads she spooked at nothing and bucked me off.
So ever since then she has worn the beads and been much more chilled out. Since I got them I have ridden without them once and she was spooky!

If she was in proper work I'd just ride her through the spookyness, but we are only walking and she needs to stay quiet. The rhythm beads appear to be helping (aswell as looking good) so they will stay!

I got mine from this on ebay only £9 and I had a set made up specially in the colours I wanted.

I had them for an old pony of mine who was not so much spooky, but was quite fast and had a tendency to lose his rhythm. I found that they were great because I listened to the noise the bells and beads made, which helped to regain a steady rhythm again. Also, they are really cute and look amazing on the horse/pony!! We bought a feather to clip on ours too :p x

I made sets for my two. Just a bit of fun really and they look pretty...least to me!

They did seem to relax the ponies a bit but at the end of the day if they are going to spook then the beads won't stop them. They did help me keep an even tempo when hacking.
