Almost 2 weeks ago I had a bad fall off my horse. We were in a lesson and were cantering without stirrips over polls on the ground. My horse lept over one and I lost my balance completely and went flying into a jump that was in the way. I hit my stomach on the upright polls hard.

Now my ribs have been hurting since. This morning it feels really bad. Anyone had this before. I don't want to go to the doctor cause I doubt they can do anything.
How would I know if my rib was cracked should I just wait it out and hope it gets better?

Yeah...worth a quick check up to make sure you have not bashed anything else in there. But if you are bruised internally or have cracked ribs, they take several weeks to mend I am afraid.

did mine a few weeks ago took thre weeks to feel any better so painful when i coughed or sneezed ect couldnt lay down in bed i would go to gp if no better soon

Ribs really, really, really hurt, and take ages to feel better. If you were to go to my local (UK) A&E they wouldn't even bother to x-ray you on the grounds that if your ribs ARE cracked/broken, there's not alot they can do about it beyond give you some paracetamol and advise rest....
I know!!
Hope you start to feel better soon!

Hi - yes ribs take ages to get better!

I fell off a horse afew years ago which fell and landed on me - the hospital x-rayed my arm which was just sprained/bruised. They didn't x-ray my ribs as they said there was nothing they could do unless you had a punctured lung and couldn't breathe!

The rib was bad for a few weeks - couldn't sleep on it at all, hurt when I coughed, laughed, breathed, etc. Still got twinges months later!

I wouldn't worry too much unless you have problems breathing

Actually ribs heal fast and are a lot better than tearing the intercostal muscles which will take around 6 weeks of more to heal.

Problem being if you fell off you can do both. I cracked a rub from coughing with pneumonia, and it healed really quick (3 weeks ish), but was VERY painful.

There is no point going to A&E, they won't do anything about ribs or muscles, so a waste of your time - unless you are having trouble breatheing which may indicate a punctured lung.

If you are able to take it, an anti inflammtory like ibuprofen or diclofenac from your GP is the best option

Agree with everyone. there is nothing they can do for them. BUT it is ever so painful - especially to cough. anti inflams. definately the only thing to ease pain.

hope you get better soon.
