I need to get someone out to help me with an issue I have with my horse. I've already tried someone local, and it didn't really work out for us. (Not going into details on here as it's not relevant.)

I therefore would like to try a large "name" to see if they can help me.

Ideally I do not need anyone patronising me, or telling me how I've been doing it all wrong. I'm experienced around horses, but have hit a stumbling block with this one.

I don't have any experience of Michael Pearce but I really rate Richard Maxwell. He's just such a genuine horseman. I also like that he's happy to explain everything really well.

Who is Ben Hart?

He's primarily a clicker trainer (http://www.hartshorsemanship.com). I have his book which is really good, but no personal experience of him.

I knew someone who sent a TB with some serious ridden issues to Michael Pearce and it worked out very well for them.

Personally I would go for an Intelligent Horsemanship RA (http://www.intelligenthorsemanship.com/specialist-horse-training.html). Adam Goodfellow and Nicole Golding are the ones I have experience of and both are excellent, they have written a couple of books though I'm not sure they'd count as big names (http://whisperingback.co.uk/).

Michael Peace is brilliant and I'd recommend him to anyone. I don't know Richard Maxwell but personally I don't like the use of pressure halters or sending horses backwards etc.
Michael turned up with a long rope and used my tack / headcollar. No gimics or fancy kit just brilliant horsemanship.

I have watched a few Michael Peace videos on Youtube and from what Ive seen I really rate him! He has a lovely way about him and seems to do an absolutely cracking job with horses that other people have written off. If I ever had a huge problem I couldnt fix, he would be my first call. I dont think hes astronomically expensive either :)

I would use Guy Robertson, I was so impressed with what I saw when I watched him work with some horses last year, he has such a calm and quiet way about him it was a pleasure to see.

We've used Richard Maxwell - fantastic. Explained everything clearly, so we could replicate if had any recurrence of problems, answered endless questions patiently, had a nice way with the horse.

Not had experience of any of the others, though.

out of interest, how expensive are these these 'big names'? I tend to think there must be a lot of very good, less well known (or with less PR!) trainers that dont want all the publicity that comes with being a 'name' but might be very good.

Many years ago I made a tentative enquiry about Richard Maxwell and I think it was somewhere in the region of £350 for half a day.

I do believe a few years later had less work and it was cheaper, but I don't know his prices now. Apologies to Richard Maxwell if I have remembered this wrongly.

Edited to say - I just looked on his web page and it is now £400 for a 4 hours visit and a halter.

I know both personally and taken clients horses to both

I rate both and they are good

Michael's home is very welcoming and you will be able to chat through your issues over a cuppa.
