Just wondering who has the oldest ridden horse on here?
(horse not pony, out of interest really, as wee ponies are more well known for having longer working lives)

I have a 20 year old in regular ridden work, hacked out this morning with a 29 year old tb, who is fit as a flea and bounces just as much...:D

Sooo was just wondering who has a golden oldie? What do you do with them? And don't you think the older equine deserves more credit?

This was my old girl when she was 33/34 with my son on board. I lost her this year at 35.

i've already been beaten but i'll add it anyway!

i ride a 20yo warmblood and we compete at elementary still hopefully dabble in a few easy mediums next year too :) still going strong! he also has cushings and spavins in both hocks but keeps getting better with age!

My mare is between 32 and 35 retired last year but due to my legs being rubbish she still carries me to and from field. Retired as tired not unable to continue, has various medical conditions and I want her to get a retirement.

I have already been beaten, but hey ho ... I regularly ride my friends's 34 year old and will be riding him tomorrow and most probably on Saturday ......

I wonder if he is the biggest, as he is approx 15.3 hands and it is normally ponies that go on and on .....

He is a lovely Dun and is blind in one eye, other than that he is as fit as a fiddle (fingers, legs and everything else crossed here :o)

ETS ... I may even pop on Motor this weekend .... have not ridden him since early this year ... he is now 31 and my lovely Cushing's horse in my siggie :) :)

Mines only 23, 14.2 so not a tiny pony, connie x tb. She doesn't do what she did in her prime, but can still win unaffiliated 3', novice unaffiliated dressage, win local open wh. Can still do a schoolmistress role of lateral work, although not in practice enough to do it bd. Hours of fast hacks showing up younger 16.2's. And can still pop a 5 bar gate in trot, although I wouldn't ask her under saddle.
Oldest I've actually known was 42, & still jogging & leaping about on hacks the day before he died.
Nikicb- she looks absolutely fab, I wouldn't ever have guessed her age.

My Welsh mare is 22, has cushings and spavins and still works most days. Last summer she won at a gymkhana and a working hunter. We have dressage lessons every week and she is teaching me to be less hopeless. Last year we did RAF Halton and jumped everything, including the plane, and another 15 mile sponsored ride. These pictures are from last year (don't have any newer ones on my HHO account). I've had her since she was nine and am dearly hoping she will go on forever.

My Welsh b was learning half pass at the grand age of 31, retired at 33 and died at 39 still full of herself and getting away with murder.

The oldest I ever had was 26. She was jumping 1m 10" up to 25, was the only horse in the yard that would jump a single barrel. the guy that had the yard(showjumpers), reckoned we were schooling the wrong horses... he jokingly told me to make sure she had a little word with his showjumpers, lol..
Very touching story... My dad loves horses although he hasnt ridden since he was a teenager. He used to ride his grandads pony, (14.2HH), Tom the pony. He was a working pony, back in my dads youth, pony brought milk to creamery, ploughed fields etc.. and grandchildren rode him to and from fields.. My dads grandad used to swear by feeding them up, but god love them, they worked it off. Anyway, Tom the pony lived to the grand old age of 40. He had been retired in a field about 2 miles away from the house/farm. He jumped the gate and galloped home, my great-grandfather flew out into the yard when he heard hooves, and Tom was in his stable. He gave him a scratch on the forehead and the poor mite just dropped dead. He wanted to be at home to die. I well up just thinking about it, and I missed out on meeting him by 4 years. Some pony, and such a fab story. My dad even wells up talking about it after a pint or two.......

My TB is 22 and still competes at RC level. He has no heath issues other than a little stifness on cold day! He was a flat racer so has been in work since he was 3!!!

I retired my 15.2 TBx last year at the age of 36.

Only reason for doing so was because he was getting a bit unsteady on his feet and stumbling now and again while out hacking (vet came out to do an OAP check and to confirm what I had already suspected - he was going blind).

Took him out in hand last weekend and he pulled like a train and jogged side ways down the road

Apart from a few grey hairs and not a lot of top line he's looking great and I love him to bits.

Aww it's sooo good to hear about so many golden oldies, do keep the stories coming :D

Anyone with a horsey 20 or there about and upwards....tell us about them!!

I hope J will keep going until his 30's, well as long as he is happy and well of course..

My old boy was ridden up until he died unexpectedly of colic aged 27. Here he is at the Badminton ride aged 25. He was 14.1 so not a tiny pony but not quite a horse either!

I used to work at a very well known top class riding school and competition yard. 1 of the school horses was over 40! He was 15hh and had competed at Advanced level dressage before becoming a school horse in the mid 80's! He was still doing 1 easy lesson a day when I left in 2010.

I also used to ride a 27yo 15hh welshX who had competed upto GP dressage in his day.

My young girl is 18. She was retired through injury at 15 but defied the vets to come back into work at 18. She is currently laid up with a bout of laminitis, but is now sound again in her boots, so fingers crossed I'll be working her again in a couple of weeks. :)

The pony who taught me to ride, was ridden up until she was 32 years old by me!
Excuse bad riding, bad position etc.. I was learning, I have since improved;)
