Ridden showing questions

Hello all!

I am doing my first ridden showing classes this weekend and have some questions:

What will I be expected to do? What format does it follow?

What shall I wear? I'm doing ridden coloured and ridden show cob. I'm thinking cream shirt, blue tie, beige jodhs, long boots and brown jacket.

I need a flash on my lad. Does it matter at local level?

You can expect to go round and show walk, trot and canter on each rein (you will be usually asked to change rein through trot across the diaganol infront of the judge). Then you will be asked to come in and line up. It might be in an order, or it might just be that you all file in and stand in the order you were walking around in.
Then each horse will be invited to do an individual show. You will come out of the line up and halt infront of the judge while they walk around and have a good look at your horse. Then you can do your individual show - walk, trot and canter on each rein, change of rein in canter should be through trot. Flying changes are out of place in an individual show. If you can do it nicely and consistently then a rein back is nice to add, before halting infront of the judge again, salute with a smile and walking back into line.
After the judge has seen all the individual shows then you will all file off in walk again and walk around the ring, before the judge calls you in in the final order.

A flash isn't ideal, but esp at local level you are better off being in something your horse goes sweetly in rather than having the right tack but giving a poor show. If your horse goes well without a flash then I would take it off.

Assuming your brown jacket is tweed? If so then your turnout sounds great. Are you wearing a velvet hat too? That would be ideal, though not the end of the world to wear a skull with navy velvet silk. Do you have a brown leather crop? That would be correct, as would short POW spurs (no need to use them, but they are part of correct turnout).

Needless to say, everything about you and your horse should be immaculate, and, don't forget to smile and look like you are enjoying it!!

Dont forget hairnet and brown gloves and all clean neat and tidy. The flash is acceptable at lower level but nothing improves a cobs head more than a wide cavesson. Please dont stop right in front of the judge [I hate that] after your individual show! A neat finish from trot to walk to square halt a small distance away gives the judge a good lasting impression...smiling helps too!! Enjoy and best of luck.

One thing to remember is if you are first in the ring to proceed round on the left rein. In the Cob Class you may be asked to show an extension in canter as well, usually once in the 'go round' and then again at the end of your individual show.

Sorry I beg to differ! ALL ridden classes enter the riing on the RIGHT rein and NOT the left.

Agree.

If you don't feel confident with what's going on then just make sure not to be first in, then you can just listen to instructions and follow others, helps settle the nerves a bit!

That is correct.

You are on actually on the 'right rein' and you go round the ring clockwise, basically as soon as you go into the ring, you go left (if you think of it that way) but like jnb says, you are actually on the right rein and the judge will be to the right of you when you look over your shoulder.
