The muppet has his first veteran class on sunday and i need some help as i've never showed before.

The VHS says that his age needs to be displayed on his bridle or on an armband - is this true for unaffiliated?
slightly worried as well because BSJ still has my passport - i should be ok with a copy shouldn't i?

how do all you pros do it? im flapping already because i have so much to do to make sure he's as prepped as possible before i have my lasik tomorrow (wont be allowed up until the actual day of the show)

Yes unaff needs to have age displayed as well. You can make one for the arm easy enough.
A copy of your passport should be fine, I have done it at County level and they only ask for a copy then too.

The easiest way to display age i think is on a dressage disk on the bridle.

There are a few rules for veteran classes though. No earings, no gallop in the show and I'm almost sure no spurs.

As far as turnout, he needs to be plaited and tail pulled, no feathers, no whiskers, trim around the chin etc. If he has white hooves, DO NOT put black hoof oil on as most judges hate it!!! Either use a small discreet numnah under your saddle, Preferably the same colour as your saddle or go without one if your saddle fits well enough. Wear a shirt and tie with your jacket. In the back of my brain im sure veterans are shown in a navy jacket but im not sure, best check on the veteran horse society website. Make sure your hair is in a hairnet and gloves are a must.

Have a feb time and make sure you grab loadsa pics! Good luck!

Thanks for the advice of "no gallop in the induvidual show" mrrogers, I will be campaigning the veteran trail next year, I can't wait for my horse to turn 15 so I can get cracking. At the moment there are very few classes for a Lusitano at horse shows so am sticking to dressage at the mo, next year though - BRING IT ON!! :D I must be one of the few people who can't wait for their horse to turn 15, I wish they had had these classes 20 odd years ago as I had a fantastic little horse who didn't look a day over 10 and at 20plus years old was still beating the pants of horses half his age!!

SWPA hold a show in the Grange which has Foreign breed classes you could enter him in Eeyore. Don't see why you couldn't have a bash as competition horse either

thanks guys :)
I've ordered my trimmers so hopefully I'll be able to attack those whiskers tomorrow night (£9.25 for next day delivery )
he's a working hunter type so I assume he still gets shown with the ride wearing tweed and a shirt and tie? the VHs website doesn't really have much info on turnout so I'm assuming he gets turned out according to type - he's a Dutch warmblood but quite heavy built.
I'm plaiting his tail - don't think he would be too please with me pulling it tbh and I'd quite like to be able to walk for the foreseeable future :p
I'll be on proud mummy duty when he's being ridden - I can't wait to see how he does a he's usually such a show off in the collecting ring. he also needs to learn that being done up and going into the main aren doesn't mean he's goof to be jumping as he seems to panic a bit in those situations

Veterans should be shown according to type so plaited and pulled would be correct, and tweed jacket for the rider. The general rule is show ponies and hacks you show in a navy jacket, anything else in tweed. Oh and if he's a hunter type then plain browband not a blingy one :) Although if it's just local level you would be surprised what some people get away with  Good luck :)

Hope this link works!!

http://veteran-horse-showing.co.uk.p2.hostingprod.com/files/RuleBook.pdf

There is a section in here for Clothing (in-hand and ridden) and tack along with lots of other useful information!

Good luck, enjoy it!!
Up until 2 years ago I used to do the in-hand classes with my boy (he is 28 now) and he loved every minute of it - I let him go out on a high when he won his last show which was a regional final I still do local shows with him but I don't want to travel him all over the country now..well that and I am not fit enough to run with him anymore and I can't do the ridden classes as he STILL thinks its all a race!! (he wasn't a fan of the 'no galloping' - even when we were only meant to be doing a group walk....)

linzi1 - 28 is a good age :) mine's 20 and we're still jumping 1.20 although i've cut it back to twice a week now and the 1.20 is one or two fences to prove i can still do it :p

TelH - ive got a collegiate hunter bridle with the plain browband and wide noseband for him. I can't decide whether to use my snaffle or to put him in the pelham. Ellie isn't sure about the double reins but she's going to have a go tonight so we shall see. he's used to both as i regularly switch between the two depending on what we're doing (we have no brakes sometimes )

start as you mean to go on, and all that :D

He shoudl be shown as his type whether veteran or not, so natives would be untrimmed and unplaited, tweed jacketa nd plain tack, riding pony plaited and pulled, navy jacket and blingy browband.

In the VHS older section there is no canter let alone gallop. Hence my boy not ebing allowed (he does everything at varying speeds of canter these days....)

Good luck

I am not entirely sure why my post seems to have re-posted itself?! Computer has a mind of its own!!

He is 28, going on 3. Only yesterday he disgraced himself when the y/o turned him and his field friend out, and he merrily bolted off - charged through the gate that the y/o was in the process of closing, taking his field friend with him!! I'd love to still be jumping that height - sounds like he enjoys it!! I gave up a long time ago - whatever the height with him, whether it be 10cm or 1m10 he had to approach at 90mph. We had to go backwards around the corners so that he could not see the jumps too early or he would just pick which jump he fancied and was way too strong for me to do anything about it! Needless to say we didn't fair too well.... although we always got a few 'nice' comments afterwards (normally - well done for not falling off!)

Anyway... First and foremost - enjoy your class!! And I look forward to seeing some photos!

Hi, don't want to be negative but do treat this as a county level showing class - veteran classes are increasingly seen as a second career for top level show animals. I've become quite depressed over the past few years at the way the classes have been going. I'm not a member of the VHS nor do I contest the classes, but I do follow the results.

I've done tons of of un-affiliated VHS, and never needed to display the age? However i'm sure it won't hurt to display it. Horse should be turned out to type and there's no gallop and definitely no spurs.

Have fun :)

wow i really like him!

I would still show his age. If you have a judge that is a veteran judge, they will appreciate the extra effort you have gone to

i attempted to take jerry's whiskers off today...
... and he wasn't having any of it - he snorted and squealed at the trimmers, then reared and planted himself in his "safe" corner :(

so its back to the scissors tomorrow morning before his class. im starting to wish id brought his tack back to put the polish on it.

oh well, early start - hopefully it'll be worth it

here's my plan for tomorrow morning:
-apply polish to tack
-wash legs/feet, behind ears and face (particularly eyes and nostrils)
-trim whiskers
-plait mane/tail
-curry comb (last ditch attempt to get rid of winter coat)
-apply black hoof oil then clear over top when dry

is there anything else i should be doing or have blatently forgotten?
i have a copy of his passport to prove his age and a wee disc for his bridle - everyone was turned-out so nicely today so im a little bit nervous :p

he did ok considering it was his first attempt.
he refused to stand still for the judge when he was looking at confo so he didn't get placed but never mind..
he came 3rd in the lightweight hunter though so was very happy with that :D
I'm going to be brave and try the wh class next time :p

there's pics in comp riders - thread title is ingliston grand slam - unaffiliated showing report :)
