This may be a dumb question but could you ride and lead with the horse your leading wearing side reins or a bungee or something similar or would this be a stupid thing to do? I have two horses, both immaculately behaved and very experienced doing ride and lead and I'd quite like some way of the horse I'm leading working correctly rather than just blobbing along next to me. This would be to hack them round a 45min road route only in walk and trot.

I might, as long as they go properly forward into it - will they do that with no rider? - Would worry that they would slop along with their head down and bum somewhere out in the next county. Other than that it wouldn't worry me.

I ride and lead mine but just in a bridle mine are both very well behaved have gone on quiet country lanes on occasion at times when little to no traffic with no problems, remember when I was younger and used to go to the riding school and had to ride and lead two ponies with children on out hacking! Health and safety would never allow that now but never ever had a problem even though I would often be riding a neurotic mare!

I rarely ever have the lead horse in side reins, usually just in a bridle or if I am swapping halfway tacked up!

Like Sam it was the norm to take two lead rein children out and when taking the ponies to the fields riding one and leading four - all in home made halters and bareback.

That sounds more like walking / trotting with neck strapped down than working correctly to me !
45 mins without a break is a long time too isn't it ? Wouldn't you have to get off and loosen the side reins?

( can you tell I'm not a great fan of side reins)

I too used to ride bareback leading a pony either side when I worked at a riding school. Not one to advise on safety.

I only ever ride and lead with the ponied horse in a halter and bridle with no attachments. I wouldn't put side reins on a horse being ponied, sounds like an accident waiting to happen I'm afraid.
