Hi all,

Have just bought a new horse (15.2hh gelding who looks quite hackney with straight forelegs, high set neck, long back, high stepping action) who has been driven for the last 4 yrs at advanced trials. He is very nice to ride in that he is quiet and rythmical with a nice mouth. However, his bending is non-existent, falls in/out when you use the rein for direction/flex/half-halts etc. So I have a couple of questions:

Should he come back to ridden aids fairly easily by your exprience?

Do you think it would be a big no no to show him in a small ridden class as he has quite a high stepping action from the hackney?

Thanks for any opinions :)

I have no idea about showing him so can't comment but the bending/flexing will come in time. Perhaps try a bit to help with the steering for now,do some carrot stretches from the ground to encourage his muscles to be more flexible and work on your schooling and he will come right.

He does seem quite flexible - just as if he has forgotten the ridden aids so to speak. Starting ground work, stretching etc with him as well as schooling under saddle and lunge work so fingers crossed we will start to see an improvement soon :)

Anyone else any idea re. showing? May just have to stick to dressage? :)
