Hi all. I am soon going to be looking to buy my first horse. I've been riding for a couple of years and will be looking for an allrounder that I can improve on with a view to possibly hunting or XC.

I live in South East London and have had RideIrish near Hildenborough (Kent) mentioned to me as a dealer which is not too far for me to get to. I have no experience of dealers or buying a horse etc but the horses look nice on the website.

Any advice as to RideIrish or any better options would be appreciated. Feel free to send me a private message if necessary.

Thanks in advance !

A google search will bring up lots of info on them, some good & some not-so-good. I have no personal experience but a quick scan of the interweb shows they are considered to be overpriced (but that is a very personal choice of how much something is worth), have a nice selection of horses but seem to have a bad reputation with various vets.

Wherever you chose to buy from, private sellers or dealers, buyer beware! As this is your first horse, take an experienced friend or instructor. View the horse as many times as you need to feel confident it is right for you. Ask to catch it from the field, to see/help tack it up, be around it in the stable, hack/school/jump/take it on roads depending on what your ambitions are and vet the horse to be sure of no physical issues.

Happy horse shopping!

I was watching some if theirs jump yesterday and I would def go in with your eyes open, a they had some amazing party tricks!!!
Personally I would avoid both dealers as they are linked and know far too many people who have had their fingers burnt buying from them, but if you do want to buy from them have them individually vetted using your own vet and take bloods

My daughters horse was purchased from them by his previous owner, he was a substantial amount of money( 8 thousand) and passed a 5 stage vetting for potential as an eventer. Three years later I bought him as for significantly less as he doesn't jump, he can jump and has a fantastic pop on him but panics mid jump.
I think he was very overpriced by RI personally but maybe they were going on his breeding.

It's "caveat emptor" for a reason (that's "buyer beware", for the non latin speakers amongst us, BTW). Make sure you tell whoever you buy from that this is your first horse, and be very honest (with yourself as well as the sellers) about you abilities and expectations. Good luck, must be exciting for you - hope all goes as you hope.

Another recommendation for clipcloptraders. I bought my girl from there and she is everything described. Emma is great and totally honest and upfront about her horses. (not linked to any other dealer just to confirm that)

have heard lots of mixed reviews, some have been happy though. As with any dealer, go more than once, with an instructor or someone experienced, try in different situations and get a full vetting. If you're looking for more dealers though, couldn't recommend Clip Clop Traders enough! Prestwood Farm also very good. Good luck :) xx

As above..... I also would recommend Clipclop traders, I bought my boy from emma a few years ago and he was exactly as she described him.... I rode him a couple of times, fresh from his stable, on different days.

If you are honest with emma about your ability she will sort you out the right horse..
My horse is a ISH from Emma , lives out 24/7. 365 days a year, lives on fresh air and has never had a days lameness.... speaks volumes if you ask me..
I would buy another horse from Emma ...
Good like, hope you find your dream... :D

hi, I haven't any experience of Ride Irish but Stubley Hollow in Derbyshire are fab, we have bought 2 from them, very honest and they wouldn't sell you something unsuitable, I know is quite a trek but well worth it!:)

Another highly recommended for Emma at Clip Clop.
Got my boy from him and he has been everything and more.
Second the advice above. Tell her exactly what you want. Don't over egg your abilities, be honest and she will find you something suitable.
Bought Sailor over year and half ago and still keep in touch with her.

I have had experience with Ride Irish, horse great, as described but probably on the expensive side and Clip Clop good and bad. If for any reason the horse does not suit they will generally take them back within a specified time but will only exchange for another horse, generally more expensive !! I would recommend Avril at equine agents in east sussex, if your horse doesnt suit I have known her always exchange fairly and in some cases refunded the purchase price.
