Merry Christmas to everyone!

At the moment im in the process of looking to buy again after a 3 year break whilst at uni - My last few horses were all bought privately, either by word of mouth or local advertisement etc and have been absolutely fantastic. However now I dont know where to start...the website www.horsequest.co.uk looks fantastic and there are some wonderful horses for sale on there so there is a good chance I may go private again but ive also noticed a lot for sale from specific sale yards such as coldicote and ride irish. I was wondering if anyone has bought from any of these or knows anything about them - the horses look great but theres just something inside me that makes me want to stick to private sales....any advice would be appreciated!

Have just received a PM letting me know about one incident where a buyer had to put down a horse from such a company for medical reasons...am seriously doubting going through a company now!! Thanks for letting me know xxx

sorry to be so hard but did he/she get their money back or are they losing the cost of the horse and vets fees?

I dont know, but I guess after youve handed over the money its all down to you, so they wouldve been very lucky to get anything back...have a look at the website ive been looking at though, i still think the horses look pretty good quality www.rideirish.co.uk

then again, i guess they are only pictures, they might be completely different in real life!

true, read on here that someone had brought a horse unseen because of the distance .looked great in the photos but when he was delivered he wa covered in scardoids, they were never mentioned.

id would be hearrtbroken if the horse had just been brought then needed to be PTS, such a hard thing to have to do and of course loseing the money would mean a long time before buying another.

Ive become increasingly against the idea of buying unseen...a friend of mine was extremely lucky in that she bought a mare from a local dealer with a fantastic reputation, totally unseen. Unfortunately for her, the mare turned out to be completely loopy and frankly pretty dangerous, she would often rear and not worry about going right over on her and would fling her legs about on the lead rein as well. Luckily for her, the dealer took her back and gave her a full refund to preserve his reputation in the area but it was a definite one off! Like you say, i dont fancy spending a lot of time, effort and money getting a horse to then encounter problems straight away but buying is such a gamble!

ive never been in favor of buying unseen, horses are not like cars and just because the "specs" are what you are looking for doesnt mean you will get on.

it is sad that dealers have such a bad reputation though, some of them are very very good, but its impossable to know the good from the bad untill you buy a horse, at which point its too late!they who shall not be mentioned by admins decree are a trpical example of why even good dealers are avoided.

Be very careful- you sound as if you are knowledgeable but some of these dealers will stop at nothing-even if you try horses out/go and see them make sure that you've read the t&c. Some do not let you have them vetted before taking them home-instead you have them vetted once you've paid for them. If they fail then there are all sorts of problems returning them. Have just spent 5 months looking at horses- spent the summer watching websites of various dealers (not the ones you mentioned)-surprising how the same pictures turned up either at different yards/under different names/under reduced prices from having been returned! There are good dealers out there-try and find one that you know is reputable.

no money was returned for the horse! Friend was out of pocket and has not been able to replace her.

If you can find a reputable dealer then it is good because you have the right to return the horse but there are so many odgy dealers out there!
I would never buy unseen because you never know if you will be compatible! Horses can be like people, you may have a personality clash or not enjoy how they ride etc?

We're horse hunting too at the moment and have to say, dealers and sales are SOOOOO tempting... Just had a very sureal experience with a private horse for sale. Horse looked absolutely ideal, right price, very taken with him... advertised as needing quick sale... owner won't let him travel for 4 hours to get here as it's too far for him???!!! Eh what's that about!!!

Well ive never heard of that happening before!! You'd think they'd do anything for a quick sale..very odd! What type are you looking for at the mo - i can keep an eye out for you whilst im doing my own hunting! xxx

My friend's Mum has bought two horses from Ride Irish, over the past three years, both great horses. They were what they were in the pictures when they got there and when they got them home. Silly people do silly things with horses and cause so many problems.

A friend went and viewed a few at rideirish and was impressed. nothing for her at that time, but all nice types and as described. Not cheap though!

I purchased a horse from Ride Irish 2 months ago now. He is everything the advert said and certainly more. All the horses were in excellent condition and nothing was hidden from view. We were allowed to ride unattended and see to the horses in their stables on our own. I would recommend them to anyone, just remember they are still dealers and they are expensive!

I wnet with a friend and she bought a gelding off of Chuck.... she still has him about three years later and so far as I know is pleased.

Maybe he was a bit younger than advertised and expensive.... but we found him to be pleasant and not at all pushy

Since November 2007 I have been to visit ride irish about six times, they mus think I am such a time waster cause I am sure they must remember me, I know they see lots of people everyday but they are always so nice anf treat me the same everytime. All the horses they have advertised are lovely animals, and always the same in the flesh. I never quite have enough money, I tell them my budget but they still let me try the horses, spend time in the stable with them, tqck up if I wanted to, hose them down, they are good about hacking out as well, it's a bit of a treck to the main road, about 20 mins trotting, but well worth the busy road. Really gives you a chance to get to know the horse. I have a couple of friends who I have been up with and they have bought, both pleased, the horses seemed a bit green when they got them home, but once they had settled after a few weeks they were fine. So all good comments apart from price with regards to Ride Irish
