I prefer the ones that come in 2 parts anyway, as they don't rub as much. The back part is a wraparound type exercise shape, the front part is the neck and shoulders that attaches to the front of the saddle and to the bridle headpiece. There are double buckles to the front but as it is not attached other than at the withers, there is room for any shoulders. I also use a fly mask.

In horse fly season, I also have a centre section round my legs. So, a 4 piece protective shield!

Thank you for replies and pic🙂,it was horrendous yesterday he was covered in them plus he's quite sensitive so he gets upset even before they bite! I just didn't want to order one then it didn't fit with him being really broad chested.i didn't realize they came in two pieces I thought they were like a standard fly rug with a cut out saddle area (although I haven't actually looked at any yet I thought Id get some recommendations first)

I found the ones that were all one piece rubbed the point of shoulder if they were a bulky type of horse. I do have a posh fully zebra one, mine was by Epplejack or something (I use that for my other horse), but the one in the photo (with Rigsby) is a mesh high viz back exercise sheet with some tulle sewn on to make it longer and the front of an old fly rug (I took scissors to it to remove the back) as I think the zebra stripes do help.

The horse flies are awful, I find short rides at 6 or 7 am are the only answer,my black cob is spending his day in his field shelter with hay hes like a magnet to them.

I’m hijacking the thread slightly - colours. Did I read somewhere that light colours/ the zebra print are better than darker colours?

I've noticed a dark thin-skinned TB on my yard wearing zebra fly rug all day has zebra shaped sweat patterns. However zebra is supposed to confuse flies so my ride on is that and I've never noticed her sweat up.

Light colours should stay cooler than dark colours but I'd imagine that the material is more important than colour.

My cob is also black and he seems to attract them way more than the other two who are skewbald and black roan, the black roan rarely has any on him
