Hello
Im thinking of buying a spanish horse next year but i would like to learn as much as i can about the breed until next year when i can afford one.
I would like to ride one in the UK if possible and get to know the breed a bit more.

Is there anywhere in the UK that offers things like this?

Located in Yorkshire but can travel if there is someone :)

Thanks

Pen llyn lusitano stud in north wales is brilliant- lots of schoolmasters that are all highly trained- bit far for you to travel maybe, but we go there for a long weekend and have 5-6 lessons.

OP - best place to ask and find out more is the BAPSH facebook page, or the BAPSH.co.uk website, both very helpfull and informative about the breed and possibly help you out with something to have a go on, I have two PRE's, sadly my mare is not ridable (field injury) and the other is her yearling, the breed is wonderfull, i personally prefer them to WB's i'm sure you will have a wonderfull time when you have your chance to try one out :)

A Spanish horse or a PRE ? As there is a big difference in price ! Have a look on the BAPSH FB page

You can come and have a go on mine, he's connie/andy/luso though but has the usual spanish 'quirks'. I'm in North-East Yorkshire!

A great book is 'Living and Working with the horse of Spain' by peter maddison-greenwell.

Also, try the bapsh Facebook page. You will no trouble finding somewhere near you. There are many breeders and people who specialise in Spanish horses in the uk. Just because they are not well known outside of the Iberian circles does not mean they are not there :)

Try Castle View Equestrian in Lancashire. There is a lovely lusitano stallion you can have lessons on. Just type it into google

Being pedantic here, but lusitanos - whilst being Iberian - are not Spanish........

Cortez, i think they have PRE's and lusos at penn lynn, but think it would be way too far from yorkshire anyway

confirm what i said earlier - if OP goes on the Facebook page for BAPHS (british andalusian horse society) they would find someone very local to them with something to try/buy/know somewhere to go

I have a spanish i have rode many sorts of horses from cob to TB nothing compares to my spanish he sharp fast learns things fast good and bad. Mine you cant make a mistake he dosent forgive something like saddle slipping will send into orbit I will never get rid of him as he so quirky but would never get another one in a millon years He is bred and broken in spain so might be the reason hes quirky i dont know Id have another cob any day

Sounds fabulous! I love "sensitive" horses"! Very comendable that you are not letting him go. I had an equally "sensitive" Arab, who had been very roughly treated in his past. His attitude was "I'll get you before you get me". I loved him, even though he was a handful, and would never have sold him on, even if I had found anyone else willing to get on him, let alone buy him!

Can highly recommend Esperanza Dressage in Northants. James and Emma are great (they re breaking one of mine in currently) and whilst its not a riding school they can arrange for lessons.

Second that: they are very professional and know the Spanish horse and his unique ways inside out.

If youre up for the journey, id email Sylvia Loch on the crc website, have a couple of sessions on her stallion Prazer, i rode her other stallion Espada, who is now retired, the feeling was phenomenal :)

Very good plan to have some trial rides on Spanish or Lusitano horses, BTW. They are the most wonderful horses, but VERY different to the average allrounder type found in the UK. They can be very hot and super sensitive, and inexperienced riders can send some of them crazy, so for your own sake and the potential horse's do your homework!

Echo what Cortez says. Had my PRE 4 years now and he is amazing but really hot and definitely not a novice ride.
Unfortunately as with many other breeds you will hear a lot of horror stories. Definitely go on the BAPSH facebook page and ask questions there. Some people have had tough experiences and will tell you who/what to avoid
These are really sensitive horses, but most of them will try their best to rule you, so you have to be tough but sensitive back. So I would also add that you need to have a trainer who understands the Iberian way of training as well as the horses themselves

I've owned my PRE for just over a month now (wow, it's gone so fast!) and find it very fulfilling. It doesn't feel like she's mine, I feel like I'm borrowing a beautiful little horse off someone and one day they're going to want her back! She's only a foal though so can't offer a ride despite being in Yorkshire. I used to work/ride in Barcelona for a little while at a stables which was made up of about 95% PRE horses and, while they aren't for everyone, I decided they were definitely for me!!
