A few people asked me to post about this so here we go:

Firstly, weekend was much better than hoped as not only did the alignment session but managed to ride both horses both days as the snow had been cleared. had a lesson on baby horse on sunday and she was fab, and my new boots turned up :)

There were about 12 of us. The session started with an explanation of where the various bits of our bodies and especially the pelvis should be and how they are all connected up, and then we each sat on the saddle horse and had our wonkyness and faults picked up, along with some repositioning. I took my saddle which was definitely the right thing to do as you place that on the saddle horse and you then cannot blame the unfamiliar tack etc ! Glad to say I wasnt the most crooked, but I wasnt the straightest either. On the positive side I have corrected my tendency to sit tailbone out but I collapse a bit down my right side. I think I sort of knew this but I think I thought it was something I did occasionally rather than having a tendency to be slightly over to the right from the getgo. After the humiliation and corrections we worked through some core strength pilates exercises aimed at riders which was also very helpful as it gave us all something to go away with.

I am now much more aware of the issue so hopefully I can eliminate it. I would definitely do another session and might do a ridden one too as of course once the horse is underneath you it all gets harder.

In short I would definitely recommend doing one of these, but would say take your own saddle.

yes, two main themes really. The first was body awareness of what you tend to do wrong and having repositioned us how it will feel, and what small change in the shoulder/hip etc will make you correct. So for me at least initially being really aware of where I am sat and actually feeling like I am to the left a little (which will be central) - but obviously need to keep this under review or I will end up over to the left! I have been really conscious to make sure I am central once I get on and keep my right shoulder from dropping. I think this is the really key bit because so often in lessons you spend a lot of time working on the horse and its great to have a specific position thing in mind to correct too. The second was working on the core strength exercises and stretches which will help to even you up and develop muscles which are more even so as to uncrook oneself.

Agree with kerilli, sounds very useful. Do you have a link to any of the pilates exercises?

I dont though I do have a list of the exercises that help specific issues. If you have done pilates before you probably will know which ones they are from the names, I can prob pm it if you want?
