It seems OH, and possibly me too, may be entering a little dressage comp at a fancy yard. Our share horse has dressage-legal tack (although I'm not sure if her lack of throat lash will be an issue?)... but we don't!

Him
- short brown boots & brown suede chaps (is that OK?)
- jods/breeches: we need to buy some - colour/cheap brand suggestions?
- shirt (pale blue non-equestrian long sleeved one?)
- tie (blue/brown again non-equestrian, is that OK?)
- jacket: if he does just the Intro does he need one? Tweed or plain coloured? Can we get something he can jump in too?
- black skull cap with black straps: does it need a cover?
- black/brown gloves (which?)
- grey BP (I'm not letting him go without as horse usually competes SJ so may well take him over the area markers!)

Her: I have all this, will it be OK?
- long black rubber boots
- cream jods
- cream shirt (non-equestrian long sleeved one)
- black/purple floral patterned tie (again non-equestrian, is that OK?)
- black jacket with black velvet collar
- black velvet hat with flesh straps
- black gloves
- black BP

Sorry those lists are so long I was trying to think of everything!

Cream/Beige
- shirt (pale blue non-equestrian long sleeved one?)
Fine
- tie (blue/brown again non-equestrian, is that OK?)
Fine

Ideally yes, will give a much better appearance
- black/brown gloves (which?)
either
- grey BP (I'm not letting him go without as horse usually competes SJ so may well take him over the area markers!)
OK, maybe try and fit it under a jacket if you decide to buy jacket

Her: I have all this, will it be OK?
- long black rubber boots OK
- cream jods OK
- cream shirt (non-equestrian long sleeved one) OK
- black/purple floral patterned tie (again non-equestrian, is that OK?) OK, but better and relatively cheap suggestion would be to purchase a white stock and use it with a white t-shirt
- black jacket with black velvet collar OK
- black velvet hat with flesh straps OK
- black gloves OK
- black BP OK

Sorry those lists are so long I was trying to think of everything!

I'm assuming this is unaffiliated so I'm sure the show centre will be fairly lenient.
Your dress is fine, but I would say that in general shirt & tiie goes much better with tweed than it does with black, you will find virtually everyone who is wearing black/navy will be in a stock. That said, if you would prefer to wear the tie then be a bit different :)
For his dress then in an ideal world he would wear leather gaiters or boots plus a jacket However it might be worth a call to the show centre to see if they would be willing to let him compete in suede chaps and minus jacket. If you opt to buy a jacket then go for a tweed as this goes well with shirt & tie. I'd try and find a tweed with some blue and green thread in it which will then match the shirt and brown leg wear.

Hi

Him - Brown boots and plain gaiters/chaps are ok to wear.
Jods, cream or white or beige. Can't he borrow some just for the event?
Blue shirt and tie are ok to wear.
Jacket tweed or plain but at all levels including Intro a jacket must be worn, unless the judges decide it's to hot and then it's ok, however it's their decision
The scull cap doesn't need a covery however it would look nicer (imo) if you had one :)
In the rule book it states White, beige or cream are 'preferred'
A body protector is allowed

Her - you :D
Black rubber boots are fine and all the other items are ok, however I would use light coloured gloves. You can buy really cheap cotton white ones for a few pounds
The shirt and tie sound ok, perhaps a plain tie would be better for BD dressage though, perhaps a light coloured one you could borrow or even a dressage/competition shirt someone could lend you?

Good luck and have fun that's the main thing! :D

you'll both need light coloured gloves. No idea on the rest. Sorry.

No they don't.

A couple of years back BD bought in a rule saying light coloured gloves MUST be worn. This caused mass debate and they later amended their ruling to 'amendment to Rule 45 – Gloves must be worn. White, cream or beige gloves are strongly preferred'

At lower level unaffiliated this would not be enforced, you are fine to wear dark gloves if you prefer.

Full rule wording is here:

Thanks everyone that is really helpful!

I shall get the OH shopping...

Be lovely to see him stop riding in jeans! (Fancies himself as a cowboy you see...)

:-)

Even if it is an unaffiliated show, the centre may be running it under BD rules in which case you need to have a read of the rule book :) http://www.britishdressage.co.uk/upl...ss Rules.pdf

If he is wearing a brown boots then go with cream/beige/yellow NOT white jods and a tweed NOT a black/navy jacket. Jacket MUST be worn unless judges specify otherwise. EVEN if it's baking hot!!

If he is wearing a skull put a cover on it. Brown velvet would be nicest.

Although you can essentially wear dark gloves, I would always go with light ones - cream shires or similar ones can be picked up from your local tack shop for £3ish! Match gloves to colour of jods.

Your attire sounds fine though i would still get cream gloves!

Remember hairnet to keep your hair tidy!
Check to see if you have to have a bridle number - some 'fancy' centres insist on it!
Remember to declare yourselves upon arrival

Oh - if the centre is running the event under BD rules - you won't be able to have ANY boots on your horse from the second you turn onto the centre line at the beginning of your test. if your horse wears boots, warm them up in them then whip them all off :)

Him
- short brown boots & brown suede chaps (is that OK?) do you have a tack auction near you? or look on ebay - as others have said, check with the venue, but cheap black plastic boots, either new or second hand would be acceptable and not cost much.
- jods/breeches: we need to buy some - colour/cheap brand suggestions?ebay for second hand or robinsons. Ideally its white, in reality if he's not stick thin cream is ok :p
- shirt (pale blue non-equestrian long sleeved one?) I'm not too sure on this either way
- tie (blue/brown again non-equestrian, is that OK?) Should be ok - stock is more correct but I think a tie would be fine.
- jacket: if he does just the Intro does he need one? Tweed or plain Navy is most correct - charity shops for cheapest option (either navy or black) business suit jacket.
- black skull cap with black straps: does it need a cover? yes, do get a plain navy or navy velvet silk. Black is also acceptable for entry level.
- black/brown gloves (which?) either
- grey BP (I'm not letting him go without as horse usually competes SJ so may well take him over the area markers!)

Her: I have all this, will it be OK?
- long black rubber boots
- cream jods
- cream shirt (non-equestrian long sleeved one)
- black/purple floral patterned tie (again non-equestrian, is that OK?) for preference I would use a plain one - borrow OH's or charity shop!
- black jacket with black velvet collar
- black velvet hat with flesh straps
- black gloves
- black BP

I think you should both sort out what you can both wear and then ring the organisers to double check everything. I have known judges tell people they can't compete because they left their jackets behind, so wouldn't put it past some judges to refuse entry if they consider you to be incorrectly dressed.

Have fun!

Only if you have good hands - the light coloured gloves draw attention to if your hands are still or not ;)

Good point about the hairnet - and don't forget to tie it back neatly in a bun, and no jewellery for either of you. Minimal makeup too.
